In the excerpt from “The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century” by Thomas Friedman, “The Untouchables” creates a new point of view for this ever changing work society. The globalization of the work force continues to pinpoint Americans by putting an ever-growing amount of stress upon them. There are many reasons why this occurs but among these reasons are the replacements of humans by technology, the outsourcing of jobs and the lack of drive by American’s to become specialized or to stand out in some way. It is imperative that American individuals seek to become better at their jobs than others, not only just fellow American’s competing for the same job but also those in other Countries who are willing to work for less or are simply more qualified. Thomas structures this piece by introducing the idea that this Earth is (metaphorically) no longer round, but rather flattened. He stresses the idea of the globalization of the work force, requiring many individuals to change their ways. He does an excellent job of keeping the reader engaged by creating an effortless flow of subject matter. Half way through the excerpt he bolds a Title, “The New Middle” which forces you to concentrate on the importance of reinventing yourself in the work place and strengthening your abilities in order to succeed. He ends solidly with an idea that insists that you think outside the box, leaving you wondering about what may be the next topic he introduces. I can resonate with this idea of an ever changing work force and globalization because my professors and advisors are constantly advising me to do just as Thomas is suggesting; to separate myself from not only other Americans but also international individuals who may also be in my field. Although I have heard these statements many times from my professors, I have not yet entered the work force in my area of
