“The homosexual’s emotional longings, his development, his dreams are human phenomena.” In Sullivan’s essay, “What are Homosexuals for?” he expresses his views on homosexuality from his view, that of a homosexual male adult. In his best known work, Virtually Normal: an Argument about Homosexuality, he makes an argument against the discrimination faced by homosexuals to all those with a listening ear. The purpose of his argument in “What are Homosexuals for?” is to show his support for same-sex marriages, happiness, and equality in a society somewhat disapproving of such. His tone beginning the essay is warm and inviting as if to welcome you into his world and show you that he is a person, too –a homosexual person in the world of a homosexual. Sullivan tests the limits with his use of one of the three appeals.
As some men struggle in sexual impurity, they would lose their relationship with God, with their wife, with their children, and with their ministry. As Steve encourage those struggle men that it is time to start because of “God is waiting to bless you, your wife needs you to step up, your kids need you to break generational sin, your church need you to serve (101)”. For the married men, they would have the sexual pure when no sexual gratification comes from anyone or anything but their wife, anything that come from outside marriage is impurity. I think the sexual impurity is like an addiction of the drug which a person knows that it is wrong but cannot overcome and stop it. From page 112 to 115 talked about masturbation which is “a symptom of uncontrolled eyes and free-racing thoughts (112)”.
Through these speeches, Plato implies that homosexual love is the highest and most honorable love to pursuit, and through his focus on homosexual love, the author justifies the idea of Heavenly Love. Pausanias argues that the true goal of Heavenly Love is to inspire young boys to find pleasure in the more intelligent older male. The objective of this love is for the older male to “share everything with the one he loves…” (Plato 14). However, in this sense of sharing, Pausanias only means knowledge. If the younger boy surrender to the older male for his personal gain such as money or office post then this homosexual love is no longer belong to the ideal of Heavenly Love.
Throughout Giovanni's Room, James Baldwin aims at conveying, through David, the main character and narrator of the story, his active and conscious reflections of his experience living life as a homosexual. Though not exactly true to his own life, Baldwin communicates the struggle of coming to terms with his own sexual identity as a homosexual in a heterosexual-centered world. Via David’s involvement with his father, Sue, Giovanni, and Hella, Baldwin points out the struggle he has expressing his love and, furthermore, rejoicing in his love for a man, by abandoning his true feelings and succumbing to the standards of normal society, which inevitably leads to his anguish David’s difficulty throughout the novel is his inability to allow himself, and other to know that he is sexually attracted to men. Growing up, he never feels that his father treats him as a son, but rather a friend. Because of his
Paul never stated that he wanted a sexual relationship with Johnny but he wanted his love and a close relationship with him. “What does Mister have that I don’t?”…“And what is it about me that Johnny Ray doesn’t like?” (Pg.280) Two men can share love without having or implying sex. Look at two close male friends or a father and son. However because Paul doesn’t clearly express his full intentions about Johnny the reader is left to infer a lot of Paul’s feelings for Johnny, however a more appropriate explanation for Paul’s feelings is that he wants nothing more than a emotional relationship with Johnny Ray; namely his acknowledgement in
For Gay Marriage, By: Andrew Sullivan, Summary (Final Draft) Before the actual article, there is a little green paragraph that states that “the debate over gay marriage highlights a vast culture divide that typically hinges on core beliefs regarding the nature of marriage itself,” (Sullivan, page 404) with that being said, my only thought was that marriage is a full commitment to the person they want to be with the rest of their life, who it is with doesn’t matter and who are we to say who can and cannot marry their “other half.” While reading this article, I highly agreed with what was written by Sullivan, because I have multiple gay friends that I love to death and deserve all the same rights. I guess that’s why this article caught my
History Boys Essay – Second Draft ‘Heterosexuality and homosexuality are a type of psychosis and the truth is somewhere in the middle’ Evaluate Bennett’s comic and philosophical approaches to sexuality in The History Boys It can be argued that homosexuality is a state of mind which implies either the temporariness of it or it being a conscious decision, however sexuality could also be central to the way you behave; an unconscious aspect of your identity that acts as a clear indication to others to how you are sexually inclined. In the History Boys, sexuality is a running theme that is seen more prominently in the characters of Dakin, Irwin and Posner, the latter being the only one who is ‘open’ with his sexuality, whereas there is a great deal of ambiguity when it comes to deciphering the sexuality of the others. This could be intended by Bennett to show that sexuality is not a fixed state but in fact quite fluid depending on the people you meet as you grow as a person. Through the analysis of Dakin we see the representation of most heterosexual teenage boys in the way he talks about Fiona in his conceit calling her his ‘western front’ indicating she is a territory to be taken over. This clearly presents his heterosexual lust for her; he also refers to her as ‘the Hun’ indicating that she is the enemy so as to speak, and is standing in between his ‘further deployments’ portraying how superficial his love for Fiona is, as he is obviously disappointed with her not allowing him to advance and is more concerned for his own needs.
I admit I was somehow looking forward to Sam and Charlie’s “love story” since I am a girl and I don’t have the slightest ideas on how boys act when their crush passed by and stuffs like that. It is not very common to boys who really let their feelings be shown by others that’s why for me boys are very unpredictable. Also love stories don’t just happen between a boy and a girl. In the millennium we are now, somehow society become aware of homosexual love like what Patrick and Brad have. I was shocked the first time I read that in this book, Patrick and Brad were the one the author made to have that kind of relationship.
The Right to be Equal Imagine not reaping the benefits of marrying a loved one or getting turned down at a job interview not because of your resume but because of your sexual orientation. Imagine living a lie to make others happy and disguising yourself to be the ideal human being in the eyes of society, all because being a homosexual is different. Although rights for homosexuals have improved a great deal, the gay community is often still frowned upon and lacks equality. Homosexual lifestyles need to continue to be recognized and offered the same rights as heterosexuals. All people deserve the right to life, liberty and happiness, regardless of their sexual orientation.
It is different when you have a work relationship and one of the co-workers is gay, but when in a social relationship it makes you uncomfortable to see or accept to males, or two females holding hands, kissing, and being flirtatious. The consequences can stem from past relationships, their exes wanting that individual back, and just society in a whole. So many deal with labeling, their lives can be pressured from people who do not accept the lifestyle. In this scenario, a man believes he is in love with a woman and they might go out on a few dates. The transgender male who lives his life like a woman never tells the man that he was born a male.
