Wills’ claims that the federal government's chief law enforcement official might need a refresher course on federal law pertaining to legal immigrants. Some American legislators have taken up the position that prohibiting bilingual ballots would be racist. However, evidence shows that millions of other American citizens feel that prohibiting the bilingual ballot is a step in the right direction. Wills’ begins his article with a political anecdote quoted by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. When he was asked whether he would favor the prohibition of the bilingual ballot, he simply stated, “Of course not.” Wills’ continues in the next section stating that our national identity and our federal laws are being weakened by immigration that is influenced by these bilingual ballots.
One of the major points against gun control is the violation of your second amendment rights, you have the right to keep and bear arms for personal protection. This paper will show there is no common sense in banning all firearms as a means gun control and it leaves law abiding citizens increasingly vulnerable to violent crimes. No Common Sense in Gun Control Over the past forty years, legislators have spent a lot of time, effort and revenue on legislation regarding gun control. Gun control advocates insist that increased gun control will lower the soaring crime rates of the early 70's. However, “recent research on the prevalence of defensive gun use has prompted growing concern that government efforts to regulate gun ownership and use may be counterproductive” (Ludwig, 2000, p. 363).
It is impossible to know what the implications of WWII namely the atomic bomb and Holocaust were on the subconscious of the American public but it is evident through the conformity and lack of voice of the post-war era that there was a malaise spreading across American infecting almost every level of society or as Norman Mailer describes it in his article “The White Negro”, “a stench of fear [that] came out of every pore of American life” causing us to suffer “a collective failure of nerve.” Post-war American’s were scared and rightfully so, these two events had an effect of epic proportion on humanity, however, the fear does not justify the reaction or more explicitly the over reaction, to individualism. Mailer in his article explores this “slow death of conformity” and the phenomenon of those who dared to reject it: African Americans and the hipster (also know as the white negro). The actual phenomenon lies more with the hipster because African Americans had been living in this existential existence long before WWII. Mailer explains the Negro “has been living on the margin between totalitarianism and democracy for two centuries” and this philosophy by which they’re living by is due in large part to being pushed to the
I will explain the extent of police corruption, misconduct and brutality in the United States. Additionally, I will research and report on two current cases involving police corruption and brutality. Police misconduct is defined as the abuse of police authority and refers to those who violate department rules and regulations. Forms of misconduct consist of false confession, false arrest, falsified evidence, false imprisonment, intimidation, police brutality, police corruption, racial profiling, surveillance abuse, and off-duty misconduct. Police corruption is the abuse of authority for personal gain.
These events have shocked the U.S. liberal media and millions of Americans, both liberal and conservatives alike, but as alarming as these things are, and as disturbing as the ongoing use of excessive force is, there has been an alarming change. That change being the militarization of America’s police forces. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to expose and sensitize the reader to and help them make sense of current trends in the police institution, the causes and effects of the increasing military tactics and weapon and how incidents of violent overreach are the only logical conclusion to a police force who views and conduct itself more like an occupying army then a civilian protectorate or defenders of the population, but most importantly to understand the dangers of the increased use of military weaponry and tactics used by civilian police forces against its citizens. Determining whether a civilian police force is becoming ‘militarized’ should not be viewed as antipolice. It should be
Controlling Police Brutality The police have served an integral part in society as out protectors. Throughout the years, however, scholars as well as we citizens have begun to question the use of force, racism and internal corruption as well as other forms of misconduct by our officers of the law. The excessive use of force by police officers persists because of overwhelming barriers to their accountability. For instance, when police do get in trouble, it is normally a slap on the wrist, a lecture or loss of a vacation day as it stated in the article “Good Cop Bad Cop.” This fact makes it possible for officers who commit these violations to escape punishment and then often repeat their offenses. Every report of abuse is often met with denial or explanation of why the abuse was necessary instead of taking any real action like a suspension or removal of their badge in most cases.
Racism, a big part of police misconduct, has become a major problem in the police force. Police officers have a tendency to harass the homeless, young persons, and minorities, among with many other groups of people. Every law enforcement officer or other government official, whether federal, state, county, city, municipal, or otherwise, takes an oath of office and promises to serve and to protect. Unfortunately, over the years we have witnessed such abominations as the Rodney King beating, a graphically disturbing atrocity caught on videotape, or the Nathaniel Jones beating in Cincinnati. We read or hear stories about Amidou Diallo, an unarmed man, being shot forty-one times by the NYPD.
1 Police Brutality Police brutality is still one of the most serious human violations in the United States. The intentional use of excessive force, usually physical, but potentially also in the form of verbal attacks and psychological intimidation by police officers persists because of overwhelming barriers to accountability. Police brutality can be from calling a citizen by his or her name to a death by a policeman’s bullet. What the average citizen thinks of when he hears the term, however, it is something midway between these two occurrences which can be more common to what the police profession knows as alley court. These facts make it possible for officers who commit human rights violations to escape due punishment and often repeat their offenses.
This wrecks the bond and love within families that leave them with “no enjoyment of the process of life” (Orwell, 280). The children turn in their own parents and they learn to love Big Brother more than their own families. Meanwhile Big Brother is observing their every move, they are incapable of becoming the person they are supposed to be. The citizens are additionally controlled by telescreens, which are two way television screens that are in all buildings and homes that broadcast propaganda and convey back the activities of anyone passing in front of the screen. If someone one happens to mumble a word in their sleep, or they do not have the correct facial expression, they will be blamed of committing thought-crime.
Police Employers Should Recognize Unfit Applicants Prior to Employment. Christopher Johnson Over the last decade the American culture has endured an unwavering increase in crime which has required law enforcement hiring authorities across the nation, to implement a surge in the employment of police officers. In the wake of this aftermath, many unworthy applicants have joined the police officer ranks and are discharging the duties and responsibilities of upholding the law. The American society has suffered a great deal through the actions of unsuitable and corrupted police officers. The most contributing factor regarding corrupt police officers correlates to the fundamental qualities and attributes of the individuals performing the job.
