Name: Peiran Xu No: J01942588 Ford’s Pinto Fire: The Retrospective View of Ford’s Field Recall Coordinator Ford Motor Company agreed, on June 9, 1978, to recall 1.5 million 1971–1976 Ford Pintos and 30,000 1975–1976 Mercury Bobcat sedan and hatchback models for modifications to the fuel tank. Between June 9, 1978 and September 15, 1978, six people died in Pinto fires after a rear impact. Three of these people were teenage girls. The fiery deaths of the Indiana teenagers led to criminal prosecution of the Ford Motor Company on charges of reckless homicide. On March 13, 1980, a jury found Ford innocent of the charges. Production of the Pinto was discontinued in the fall of 1980. This case makes me think about the many difficulties people face in trying to be ethical decision makers in organizations. * The Ford Pinto met federal safety standards, yet it had a design flaw that resulted serious injuries and deaths. However, it’s not simply meeting safety standards a sufficient product design goal of ethical companies. Any ethical company should look after their products and offer humanization services to their customers. * First, Gioia did wrong by not opting for recall. Second, from profit point, the decision was not good. Also the decision was not ethical. If the product is causing some harm for the persons using it then it’s the duty of the company to make a recall. * Everyone has got morals and principles of their own. But sometimes it is pretty possible that his principles are easily shaken by some other forces. Now a person want to remain established in the company. His principles are easily shaken by the set of principles of his company for which he is working. Thus the organizational context influence the decisions made by the organizational members. * If I would have been in his position then I would have gone with the recall.
