English 16 2/3/2012 Our Food Obsessions Do you spend a lot of time thinking about what to eat? Food has become a top priority in our everyday life. We have breakfast, snack, lunch, and snack again before we eat dinner. Sometimes after dinner we have a midnight snack before we go to bed. We eat to fill a void inside by relying on food for purposes other than nutrition, Increase in food portion served in fast food restaurants, our cultural entanglement with food, and eating to feel better are few of the reasons why we are obsessed with food. When we are hungry, we do not think about what we eat, if it’s healthy or not we just go straight ahead to eating it because we need to fill a void in our lives. We see food as a comfort to our problems, as a treat that will make everything better and depending on what we eat, we might feel depressed afterwards. I woke up one morning and because I had an early morning class, I never had breakfast. After class I went to the café, and I served myself rice and curry chicken. During the night I ate noodles and that was all I had for the day. I later realized that I never had any veggies of fruit because I was only thinking of a way to satisfy my cravings and not to promote my nutrition. We are surrounded by so many fast food restaurants. The amounts of food portion that we are served in fast food joints are tremendous in size and these fast foods are affordable compared to healthy foods. Because Junk foods are high in sodium, sugar, fat and low in nutrition, they fade rapidly, leaving us with the feeling of hunger. These restaurants serve us more and more junk food because they know that it has more calories, therefore it doesn’t leave a lasting of fullness so we tend to want more.
