Flowers: Good for Any Occasion You see flowers every day, whether it be a big arrangement of flowers or just simply passing some wild flowers on your way to school in the morning. “There are over 270,000 species of living flowers” (www.flowermonthclub.com). Flowers have many beneficial uses whether it be to brighten someone’s day or to decorate a big occasion. The use of flowers dates back to forever ago. Humans have been using flowers for all different kinds of things for centuries. “Flowers have played an important part in folk festivals, religious ceremonies, public celebrations of all kinds, and, of course, courtships. Sophisticated cultures have generally expressed a love for decorating with flowers by carefully arranging them in especially chosen containers, while other societies have used them more informally: strewn, made into garlands and wreaths, or casually placed in water holding vessels without thought of arrangement” (Floral Decoration). “Arrangements of fresh flowers make delightful home accents and thoughtful gifts” (www.mahalo.com). Balance is really important when designing flower arrangements. People do not like to see flowers that are not balanced or lopsided. However, in some modern arrangements, that is the look that one may want. The size and color of the flower used in the design plays a big role in the arrangement. “Dark color values look heavier than light values; a deep red rose, for example, appears heavier in an arrangement than a pale pink carnation, even though they are the same size” (Floral Decoration). When you put dark flowers at the top of an arrangement and lighter ones at the bottom, it makes the arrangement look top-heavy. It is good to put similar flowers exactly opposite in big arrangements. This creates symmetry. If the flowers look uneven, it creates an awkward look to the flowers and makes it look unbalanced
