Olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus Introduction: The Olive flounder or Bastard halibut (Paralichthys olivaceus) is left-side flatfish that belongs to the family Paralicthydae. Depending on locations, the species may be referred as the Japanese flatfish or Korean flatfish. Distribution and habitats: The Olive Flounder is native to the subtropical/temperate western pacific from the Sea of Okhotsk off south eastern Russia, along Japanese shores to the South China Sea. Being demersal, the adults live in waters 100 meters or more deep, and migrate into shallow waters in the spring to spawn. Olive flounder can be found lying in the bottom sediment with only their eyes exposed. Description: The flounder’s eyed side is of olive or brown color…show more content…
Under natural conditions, spawning takes place between April and June. Based on the findings in captivity, the vitellogenesis occurs at temperatures ranging from 10 to 15°C whereas optimum temperature for spawning is 14 to 16 °C whereas gonads start to degrade as water temperature exceeds 18°C. Also, light intensity influences gonad development and spawning. The development of flounder from fertilized egg to a juvenile about 50 mm long end of metamorphosis takes 60 to 70 days. Fish becomes sexually mature when two to three years old with about 30 cm length. Eggs may be obtained many times from the same flounder female during its spawning cycle, at intervals of two to eight days. A female spawner with about 2.5 to 4 kg can lay a total of about 3 million eggs in the spawning season, through successive batches of 40 000 to 450 000 eggs each. The hatching of fertilized eggs occurs after about 63 hours at 14 to 16°C producing fragile yolk sac larvae from 2.1 to 2.3 mm long with no functioning eye or mouth. It may be of interest to know that during larval development, when the water temperature is of 20°C, larvae become females and in order to increase the proportion of males, water temperature should be maintained between 15 and
