She wishes to teach this to her two daughters but times have changed and her daughters have difference views of what they think heritage is. “Everyday Use” shows the difference between learning about heritage and learning from it. The direct and the indirect characterization of the three main characters help the reader understand the different views of heritage; Mama thinks Dee rejects it, Mama is ignorant to the realness of heritage, and Maggie learns from it. The direct characterization of Dee leads the reader to think that she rejects her mother’s heritage. Direct characterization is when the narrator, in this case ‘Mama’, tells the reader what the character’s traits are.

The next stage that greatly influences Idgie’s life is when Ruth is asked to come and stay at Idgie’s home by her mother. Idgie is cautious and reluctant to Ruth in the beginning. Idgie blames her for Buddy’s death and tragedy was all she saw when she saw Ruth. Idgie taunts Ruth’s proper ways by incessantly challenging her to a battle of the wills. The moment of truth comes when Idgie dares Ruth to jump off a moving train.
Returning home from school with a new name, look, attitude, and man; Dee continuously finds reasons to insult the lifestyles of her mother and sister. Walker shows that one’s culture and heritage are represented by neither the possession of objects nor external appearances, but by one’s lifestyle and attitude. In this short story, Walker shows us how Dee was not only greedy with money but also with her heritage and had a total lack of regard for her family. It seems as if acquiring collegiate educated, she realizes that her heritage really has meaning in her life. Walker characterizes the different sides of culture and heritage in the characters of Dee (Wangero), her mother and sister -Maggie.
She states: “...her intent, her passion, her imagery, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts” (4). Tan realizes that just because her mother’s english isn’t perfect, it does not mean that she is not capable. This revelation from Tan exemplifies a loving tone that gives the reader overwhelming emotions. Tan shifts to talking about the hurdles she and her mother had to overcome because of their English. She had no confidence in her mother growing up, and saw her as a “limit” and an “embarrassment”.
‘’Where was Tess’ guardian angel’’ Hardy asks at the scene in the woods, showing that god was not watching over and did not intervene to help Tess. The tone of this is almost sneering, as if Hardy believed Victorian society was narrow minded to think that there was a greater being watching over and looking after them. In this, Tess is lonely as well, because her beliefs are no longer the same as the rest of society. When she comes across the clergyman painting the sign ‘’thy damnation slumbereth not’’, she believes that the words are condemning her. However, although she believes she is guilty, she does not believe that she has sinned.
A Woman’s Duality By Maya Asfour Edna’s self reserved character and the propensity to mask her emotions had a lot to do with her mother’s death when she was at a very young age in addition to not being close to either of her sisters, and that all the girls she befriended happened to be of a self contained type. Edna decided to take her place as a married woman with dignity, thus sacrificing her needs to attain the demands of society. But even though she does not attend to her needs they exist inside of her, causing her to question and desire while her body does what others expect her to do. Madame’s Ratignolle compassionate gesture at the beach provokes Edna to realize that she was brought up to be a reserved woman. The gesture also inspires Edna to speak openly and freely and by doing so Edna feels intoxicated as if she tasted “the first breath of freedom” [VII Chopin].
She is first perceived as a weak character who Iago says keeps many thoughts to herself: "She puts her tongue a little in her heart," meaning that many of her most critical thoughts remain unsaid. Even Desdemona has to encourage her to speak. This silence throughout much of the play may be one cause of her drastically changing at the end. Initially Emilia sets out to please Iago without question, as this was her role as an Elizabethan wife, however at the end she speaks against him when she realizes his true intentions. Her change at the end of the play could show that she’s isn’t an outsider, as she now has her own opinion and her own voice like many of the other characters within the play.
Maggie selflessly insists that her sister can have the quilts (128). Maggie is also not a very strong character; instead she stays in the background most every situation that she can. For example, Dee and her friend rapidly approached the house in their car. “Maggie attempts to make a dash for the house…” but her mother quickly takes hold of her, making sure that she does not escape. Maggie was very uneasy around her sister; her mother tells her anxiousness in regard to Dee’s visitation: “Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs, eyeing her sister with a mixture of envy and awe” (119).
Margaret Atwood makes use of several dichotomies throughout her novel, all to demonstrate how the truth is in the eye of the beholder. On the surface, the novel appears to be about a well put together woman searching for her father; however, in reality, this novel dives deep into a person’s essential nature where appearance and reality are anything but the same. She reminds readers that in reality, appearances barely scratch the surface of the truth. In Surfacing, Atwood relates new experiences to previous events that affect the narrator’s adult life, therefore ruining many of her relationships between her and loved ones. In the novel, the story places a position on the narrator’s feelings towards the blue bird known as the heron.
