Many men fell for this and in my opinion she became very powerful in a sense. I believe Cathy was a very selfish character. While reading East of Eden I thought that she might have had mental problems. I was furious that she tried to kill her baby and later on lied about why say tried to do such a thing. Then when she gave birth to her twins sons, she acted as if she did not want them and I believe that Cathy was selfish was because she shot her husband in the shoulder.
Prostitution is also associated with the feminist view that all sex workers are coerced or forced into the profession, but is this true in a country with anti-pimping laws? Kelly delves into the Zona and into the lives of sex workers to find out exactly what led them to become prostitutes. We find out that prostitution is a way to make it in a gender-oppressive society. Like many of the women in the Zona Galactica, Gabriela grew up without money. Her mother passed away when she was young and she lived with several siblings as her father was out drinking.
“He glanced coldly at George then Lennie.” (Steinbeck Pg 23) Getting defensive over the very sight of Lennie and George trying to pick a fight with the wrong people. Curley’s Wife; Judged from the start Curley’s wife is discriminated against from the start, the men on the ranch just assume she’s a whore when in all actuality she only married Curley because she had to. “She had full rouged lips and wide-spaced eye’s, heavily made up, her hair hung in little rolled clusters like sausages.” (Steinbeck pg 29) The very definition of beauty in the 1930’s Curley’s wife is lonely and in need of a friend other than her over bearing husband. Her only mistake when it came to talking to Lennie was panicking when he latched onto her hair which was ultimately her down fall.
And then Eric Birling was threatening her as if she didn’t matter leading to the violence, pregnancy and ultimately her death. Eva Smith because of her gender and social status was used as a sexual toy. Gerald Croft used her until she wasn’t needed, “she lived economically on what I allowed her” until like a toy she was discarded. Eric used her on a drunken night out when he was looking for a bit of fun “I was in that state when a chap can easily turn nasty”. Because of her gender she had no choice but to give in which caused her pregnancy.
Steinbeck uses the word ‘Coulda’ to show that Curley’s wife thinks she had the potential to be a movie star but she ended up with a guy who she hates. We know this because she says ‘I don’t like Curley’, this is interesting because every time she engages into conversation with other men she is always looking for Curley whereas now she says she don’t like him. This makes the reader think that she was using Curley as excuse to communicate with other characters and this shows her desire for attention like we discussed in the previous pare graph but ultimately shows that she is useless without Curley. Steinbeck did this because he wanted the audience to understand not always you get what your dream and not all Americans got the best out the American dreams, some peoples dreams ware destroyed in matter of seconds as we seen in this chapter as Curley's wife dies with it ends Georges Linnes, Curley's wife and Candy's dreams. In Addition, the fact that she thinks that she had the potential to be a movie star links to
7. Why is there so much more conflict between Biff and his father? There is so much more conflict with Biff and his father because Wily wants to mold his son Biff into a success that he thinks the American Dream holds for him. Although his tries throughout this molding he fails. Another reason why there was so much conflict was because Biff caught him cheating on his mom.
Curley’s wife in particular is a bully towards him as she thinks she has more power over him than anyone else, as she is married to the bosses’ son and she’s white. Crooks longs for friendship with someone but nobody wants to communicate with him as he is coloured. Excitement in his actions when Lennie turns up to talk to him shows just how lonely he is. But Lennie only talks to Crooks when all the other men are out in town. He’s quite cruel towards Lennie and torments him.
Nobody. Your brother's dead. And now your father.” which made Miro wondered and angry at her. She was trying to convince him that Artkin was his father. Miro found it hard to kill Kate because he was in love with her.
When Gatsby found out that Daisy was married he was heartbroken. As a result he did the thing that most people would when they are obsessed by a person. He tried to steal her away from her husband. Love or not, a person should realize that it is not the best thing to do to steal someone’s wife, especially if the person has a young child. He is so obsessed hat he is willing to break up a family just to have his love.
In Tom Walker, both Tom and his wife are constantly arguing and always trying to cheat each other. They both also tried to make deals with the devil and had no qualms about doing so. Tom became very wealthy on the misfortunes of others that sought his help. In Goodman Brown we hear of how the elders of the church whispered wanton ideas into fair maiden’s ears. We are also told how women desperate to become widows would sometimes poison their husbands, letting them find eternal sleep in their arms.
