“Reunion” by John Cheever is a short story about Charlie who hasn’t seen his father since his parents’ divorce. So on his way back to his mother’s house he schedules a lunch with his father. Yet Charlie’s view on his father changes when his father continually has problems controlling his bad attitude. In “Powder and “Reunion” the authors use father/son relationships, point of view and conflict to portray to the reader that almost all father and son relationships have their flaws. In the two short stories it seems as if the sons’ relationships with their father were quite different, but they also had their similarities because both of them cared for their son.
As they look at the cereal one brother says “dumb cereal, it’s supposed to be good for you” and then they agree with each other to give it to Mikey who hates everything. Since Mikey hates everything they think that he will not eat the cereal. They watch with extreme discernment while the younger brother is deciding to try out the cereal. Mikey then digs into the cereal and with excitement the two older brothers yell out “he likes it, hey Mikey!” As soon as the commercial starts ethos becomes immediately apparent with three brothers at a table eating breakfast in a traditional family setting. The commercial proves to the audience that Life cereal is not a repulsive cereal.
The passage shows the difficulty in achieving this goal and in finding the right time to do it. The story is written in third person but has a closer look into the mind of the son. The passage looks at his feelings towards his father. It follows his emotions and the effect that the situations have on him. There is an obvious dedication between the two.
The correlation between relationships and an individual’s sense of belonging can be clearly seen in the loving relationship between Romulus and his son Raimond. Both truly belong to each other through the unconditional bond of love between parent and child. The relationship also gives belonging to both through Raimond giving his father the strength to overcome constant tragedy as shown by the quotes “My son is everything to me." and “never say I don’t love you” and with Romulus doing everything in his power for his son to have a better life “he denied himself so I would have more”. The technique of anecdotes is used throughout the book to show how strong their love and sense of belonging to each other is such as how Raimond always feels safe and loved when riding with his father on their bike “Most of all, I remember his strong, bare, sun-darkened arms on either side of me as I sat on the petrol tank.” These anecdotes also allow the responder to connect more personally with the characters and their history and more fully understand their relationship.
He sought to give advice as a peer rather than a parent, which shows his devotion to his son because he is not acting like the dominant father he very clearly is. Chesterfield uses his style of diction mainly for the purpose of showing dominance. He constantly belittles his son and shows his supremacy. The different types of diction used throughout the letter all show in some way the virtues that Lord Chesterfield is imposing on his

In the novel Highwire Moon Elvia’s father are both a good dad and a not so good dad. “She guessed she was lucky, compared to most kids in the desert.
McCarthy shows the reader that throughout the book, the father and son have a special bond through dialogue and actions. They care for one another in a way that is strange during this era in the world, since the majority of the other humans would kill anything they see for food. A particular scene that shows this concept is when the father pours hot chocolate for the boy and only lets himself have boiled water. The boy tells the father “You promised not to do that”, and the father pours his water back into the pan and takes some of the boy’s hot chocolate. This shows that the boy loves his father and doesn’t believe he should sacrifice anything for him.
In the novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, the author uses the parallels of, Amir and Soraya, and their love and tension relationship with their fathers to demonstrate in the end, their fathers all they want is what is the best for them.
