To Maisel, that would be the smart thing to do, but I don’t agree with his opinion on the matter. I don’t need to stay within my intellectual boundaries. To achieve any of the goals I have for myself, I need to step out of my comfort zone. Sometimes that the only way you can figure out if a type of work is right for you. In Maisel’s own words he says “We are brighter on some days and duller on others.” With this in mind, proving that you can go beyond your native intelligence, is that much easier.
People encounter different situations in their lives; however, they do have one similarity. No matter what type of situation it is, it is necessary that we know what we are doing and that we make the right choice. In many cases, people tend to have fun at the moment and not consider the consequences, which often cause them to regret after realizing what they have done. This is quite common among people because there is this part in human minds called Id tat tends to seek for pleasure. However, there is also another part called Ego that works contrary to what the Id does.
That returning to nature could never be possible once we’ve been changed from it so. It is in our wiring to seek pleasure, and instincts take over even for the most civilized of people. But not wired into us, not pounded into our brains, but often found, is the need for personal satisfaction. Self-actualization, hope to better ourselves and those around us to some extent. How many times have we fantasized about having a perfect life, and in that fantasy, we dreamt that we are extremely happy living that life? According to Daniel Gilbert, in his essay “Immune to Reality”, “because we ignore how our psychological immune system works, we cannot predict how happy our choices will make us”. Therefore, it gets us away from the perfect life that we wish so much. At the end, can we learn how to control the Psychological Immune System to achieve happiness in our life? We would be in a better standing position if we can take advantage of the knowledge how our psychological immune system works, identify what kind of happiness we want to experience, and recognize that we cannot be always happy.
However, in Fahrenheit 451, a utopian society seems to have been reached. Perfection seemed to exist in “laws, government, and social conditions.” Compared to our modern world, this future seemed to be happier and their lives less chaotic. Humans have never liked laws because they give off a sense of restriction as well as authority. In the future, laws don’t exist and anything seemed feasible and within one’s reach. There was only a simple law, and that was to not read books as well as think, making “the mind drink less and less.” This doesn’t seem much of a sacrifice because society was filled with far more excitement than literature could offer.
