Soils of this region had always been prone to dust storms in the past, but during the drought of the 1930’s they became far more vulnerable. Farmers had removed millions of acres of the natural grass sod to plant wheat during the previous twenty years. When the wheat failed to grow as the decade-long drought arrived in 1931, the soils were left exposed to the strong winds that annually sweep across the region. Millions of tons of blinding black dust would sweep across the Plains, turning plowed fields into sand dunes. There were a reported fourteen storms in 1932.
Farming and rural areas suffered as crop prices fell by approximately 60%. There were many causes of the Great Depression, ranging from poor spending and over production to banks failing and the stock market crashing. Paragraph 2: Due to the Roaring 20’s, people were overconfident due to the information given by bad leaders, which led to poor spending. Doc A+B: According to the business cycle, there was going to be a 5 year growth for everyone in the US. -They would all become rich and poverty would just go away (Words of President Calvin Coolidge) Doc C: John T. Raskob, a well-known economist, told people to buy more stocks and in invest in banks and you’ll become a millionaire.
Growing up in a town that is heavily populated with low income families, I felt like I had seen most of the struggles first hand not knowing all the issues behind and kept inside the homes of each family. I feel like it is a major issue in America and not enough is being done to help stop it. Food availability is something that goes at the top of the chain. If food is not available then hunger sets in, which results in not getting adequate nutrition. Even though that is a simple chain it causes a tremendous amount of health issues for many
Got Food? “The Rich Get Richer, the Poor Go Hungry” written by Sharon Astyk and Aaron Newton, states that there are many reasons for hunger in the world but the main one is the rich can afford food while the poor cannot. The world is making enough yields to feed the people of the world, but the problem is that not all people have the money to buy that food. The emotional appeals that Astyk make are very strong, but you cannot dismiss the fact that her logical claims are not fully backed up. “Inequity and politics, not food shortages, were at the root of almost all famines in the twentieth century” (580).
Dust Bowl The Dust Bowl was the worst man-made ecological catastrophe during a ten year period of a rainless (during1931-1941) drought and large dust storms caused by plowing, farmers used to grow mostly wheat. The Dust Bowl was result of the worst drought in U.S. history. One hundred million acres of the Southern Plains were turning into a wasteland of the Dust Bowl. Large sections of five states were affected Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico. The Dust Bowl was mainly caused by over plowing and a perfect example of “people pushing too hard against nature, and nature pushing back”(Ib’d Dust Bowl,A Film by Ken Burns DVD).Also they needed to produce more wheat to feed American troops during the war and over 200 million acres were plowed up, which caused the land to fall apart(Ib’d Dust Bowl). Also the stock market crash in 1929 caused The Great Depression which caused wheat prices to go way down from $3.00 dollars a bushel of wheat to 10 cents a bushel,(Ib’d Surviving the Dust Bowl,2007).
Malnutrition in Rwanda The world produces enough food for every person to have over 2,700 calories per day. Given this ratio, it is shocking that 800 million people in the world are malnourished today (International Fund for Agricultrual Development). Malnutrition occurs when a person is not consuming a sufficient amount of micro and macro nutrients. Micro nutrients consist of vitamins, and macro nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins and fats that a person consumes by eating food. Malnutrition is a terrible issue that many developing countries are facing today.
The majority of food borne illnesses originates from malnutrition or obesity. Therefore over consumption and under consumption are equally treacherous. Based on a recent survey conducted by the World Health Organization in 2009, out of the nine and a half million people living in Haiti, about thirty thousand reported to have been infected with Tuberculosis (World Health
Personal Rule * Charles ruled for 11 years without Parliament. From 1629 to 1640. * This was considered legal, but unusual. It was normal for a few years to pass between Parliaments, as in Henry VII’s reign, he ran without Parliament for 7 years. * Parliament was not part of the routine machinery of government, and ruling without one made him a tyrant.
The change in consumption would ultimately lead to famine in many thriving nations. Although Pelletier’s main goal is to discuss the flaws of eating locally, he also strives to present ways in which the idea of local eating could be incorporated in today’s society. By doing this he not only appeals to environmentalist, but to everyday individuals and families with tight budgets as
In 2008-2009 the island was ravaged by hurricanes causing massive destruction to the natural resources and causing strain on the already untrusted government. In 2010 a massive earthquake hit the Haiti killing thousands. The elections that followed did not have a large turn out and the election went to Michel Martelly. According to Time World (2012) Dominican Senator Félix Bautista, who owns or controls construction companies that in the past year have received Haitian government contracts worth more than $200 million and paid Martelly a total of almost $2.6 million during Martelly's presidential campaign and after his landslide victory in Haiti's 2011
