1. Situation Description: a. Business history. Family Florist was founded in 1970 by Ramiro Contreras, who immigrated to Canada from Colombia in 1950. Ramiro was holding a bellboy position in a hotel back in Colombia so he did not have any experience or knowledge in the flower industry. One day, Ramiro was at the airport to pick up his brother, who was coming from Mexico, when he saw people waiting in line to buy flowers for their loved ones coming from abroad. He immediately saw the potential for a business. The flower business appealed very much to him; the lady selling the flowers appeared to making lots of money, so for him it appeared to be a very lucrative since the start-up costs for such a business were limited, unlike a restaurant which required a bigger initial investment. Ramiro decided to partner with one of his friends, M. Petrucci, and established a florist shop in 1970. The two associates hired Hector, the newly arrived brother from Colombia, whose mechanical skills make him a great fit for the delivery man position. As Hector learned the business, his skillset as a great salesman got him involved into the collection and sales functions, helping the growth of the company. In the early 70’s, co-founder M. Petrucci retired and decided to sell his shares to Hector, this gave Hector the opportunity to become a partner with his brother. It is in the florist shop that Hector met Vanessa, who later became his wife. Vanessa got involved in the management and accounting for the business. The new couple had two children born in the 70’s, Natalie and Hector Jr. In the same period, Family Florist moved to its current location, and Hector and Vanessa set up their residence on the second floor of the building, giving them the convenience and the practicality to be close to the business.
