Explain how Christians make moral decisions. (25 marks) Christians have different ways of making moral decisions. Some rely on pure Biblical teaching, others on the Churches leadership, and others on their own conscience and others on Thomas Aquinas’ Natural Law. People of the Catholic Church believe Jesus gave His authority to Peter, and it has been passed down ever since, currently lying with Pope Benedict. The Catholic Church has a magisterium - its teachings have a God-given authority that is equal to the authority of scripture.
Megan’s Talk 7-13 Obedience I am going to start out with a scripture from D&C 93:24, 26-28. It says, “The spirit of truth is of God, and no man can receiveth the fullness unless he keepeth his commandments. He that keepeth God’s commandments recieveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.” Our Heavenly father has given us the commandments to guide us and to protect us. Being obedient is doing God’s will. He knows what is best for us and he doesn’t want us to get hurt, so obeying His commandments will save us a lot of grief in the long run.
Placher finishes by saying that if we really believe and trust in the Bible, we should be willing to put the effort in to better understand the Bible. “Is the Bible true?” In William C. Placher’s article, “Is the Bible true?” he begins his argument by stating his claim that the Bible is indeed true, but also by trying to find a different way of explaining how the Bible is true. He proceeds to point out that his thesis entails two main claims: what the Bible means is true and we can trust the Bible as a guide. By exploring these two claims thoroughly, Placher has broadened the understanding of the importance of knowing how culture has changed over time and how people would have read and interpreted scripture throughout history.
God wants us to see the world the same way in so far as we can; but sin distorts our vision. For Catholics, the informed conscience is the highest moral authority. Our informed conscience with all the tools of discernment functions as a reliable compass to guide us in moral living. There are many good rules to live by but the main and most common rules to follow would be the Ten Commandments, Seven fatal or “seven deadly sins” both are rules that we should not do. The Church does provide rules in which one should follow, which are the works of mercy.
The counselor’s goal should be to help the person find their significance by helping them understand who they are in Christ (Crabb, 71). A person also needs assistance finding security, which is the demand that they be unconditionally loved, accepted and cared for, now and forever [by God] (Crabb, 72). The counselor should seek to help meet these needs through biblical teaching and counseling techniques. 2. Development of problems and personal need (How do the issues come about?)
The two groups’ backgrounds both highly honor scripture. In the second chapter of Square Peg Robert Mulholland discloses the idea that fundamentalists believe the Bible has “comprehensive and rationally accessible inerrant divine truths or propositions.” Their idea of the Bible is that it becomes a collection of information given vocally or dictated to writers. On the contrary, Wesleyans have the belief that the Bible is the resource by which believers need to focus on the message of God. This message is most definitively given through Jesus Christ coming to earth. However, it appears that the shift in focus can drastically change the interpretations in the Bible.
Theory Critique - Crabb and Hawkins Rose Monk COUN 507 Liberty University Dr. Hunter November 3, 2013 Concise Summary of Theories Larry Crabb’s model for Christian counselors is based on Christian values and includes secular principles that are consistent with Scripture. Plain and simple this theory works to create a receptive mind for the truth. Ultimately, the idea behind this model is to work on the thought process, and in altering the way the mind thinks, this will motivate correct actions to reach the client goal. By identifying the problems in feelings, behaviors and thinking, this model not only works to change the way clients think, yet their belief of needing anything other than God. Understanding the basics of
Let knowledge be a cosmic and complex structure, faith is the base for this structure for it provides fundamental assumptions and without these assumptions, the structure of knowledge will disintegrate. In the first Area of Knowledge religion, faith does play a pivotal role. Faith is an essential element that is mostly inseparable from the religion. An organized religion usually consists of a person’s relationship to that which they regard as holy, sacred,
A Study of Godly Ethics The Principles of a Biblical Worldview The Bible establishes the guidelines of God's ethical boundaries for all Christ followers. On some issues, God's Word speaks explicitly; however, there is less clarity in other matters and more need for discernment. As Christians learn, accept, and live the reality of Christ, they move towards a life of godliness.1 Through this process, Christians can begin to discern more clearly and live out a biblical worldview.2 Christ followers should be characterized by truth.3 If they are to be characterize by truth, what truth is must be interpreted. In John 17:17, Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth.” God has expressed Himself through Scripture; His Word is true, reliable, eternal, and the sacred authority.4 The Bible is the very word of God and should be the starting point for all thinking.5 Jesus also said that He is the truth.6 Jesus exemplifies wisdom and knowledge.7 God loves His creation enough to tell them how to live and promises to give understanding to those who seek Him.8 The root of man's dilemma often comes from not seeking God or misinterpreting the nature of God's truth.9 “The reason so few people act like Christians is that they do not think like Christians.”10 How then does one begin to think like a Christian? Christianity should be seen as the outline for godly decision making and a strategy for daily living.11 The Word of God has the final jurisdiction and is pertinent for the choices that Christians must make, many of which have moral consequences.
Essay on Topic: Short Essay on Inerrancy and Inspiration There is an increasing debate as to the reliability and authority of the Bible. This debate is crucial for those of us that trust in the Bible regarding our salvation. To say the Bible is authoritative implies that it has a right and power to communicate its message for the purpose of directing us in every facet of temporal and eternal life. This “authority” must come from a source that holds a position powerful enough to provide such an endorsement. The Bible has such a source of authority, God.
