Learning outcomes: Understand the principles of developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. Criteria 1.1-1.3 Effective communication is a skill that is necessary making and maintaining new relationships with both, children and adults. It is all about making the contact with others and being understood.
Positive relationships enable information to be communicated far more effectively. Working in a school this will benefit pupils when you are dealing with parents or carers as they will be more willing to get involved in the child or young person’s education and care. Building and maintaining positive relationships and effective communication with pupils will help them know and understand what is expected of them and acceptable boundaries. In order to develop positive relationships with children, young people and adults effective communication is vital. To effectively communicate we must: • think consciously (everyone is an individual) • explain (be clear, use appropriate language) • listen actively ( occasional nods and eye contact) • be true to our word (say what you mean, mean what you say) • recall (repeat snippets of what has been said to you) • have empathy (non-bias understanding of others situations) • clarify and question (ask the other party if they understand what you have said ) • body language (your own and reading the other persons) Not putting the above skills into practice will create barriers to effective communication and positive

Effective communication is fundamental in building positive relationships with children, young people and adults alike. When working with children, young people and adult’s communication is the most important thing to building a positive relationship. Having good communication skills will help us develop better relationships especially with younger people. Some students who lack in confidence may find it hard to communicate at all with us, so if we come across to that student in a positive and gentle manner they are more likely to open up to us and talk.
Introduction Communication can be defined as the process of passing on information from one source to another. Communication can be verbal, non-verbal and visual. Effective communication skills are important when establishing respectful, professional relationships with adults. In turn, these communication skills can be used to promote a positive adult relationship, which provides children with role models to help them learn how to behave in a respectful way. When communicating with both adults and children it is important to maintain eye contact and treat them with courtesy and respect.
Also that their needs are taken into consideration. • Showing respect- They need our respect so children and young people can extend these skills. For example saying please and thank you and also speaking to children and young people in a calm and warm way. • Valuing and respecting individuality-Children and young people have different strengths, talents and ways of handling/responding to situations. Every child is different, so some may need more support than others; this is why observations are important. Positive communication is very important as this can help build a Childs interaction skills, self esteem and confidence. It’s vital you always have eye contact with that child, and allow them to finish what they are saying. In order to boost their self esteem a child should always be praised, this will make them feel more confident and willing to try. Adapting the environment to help children with their speech and language needs can be done by using visual signs that children can understand, for example you could label the home corner, dress up area, book corner and so on.
TDA 2.3: Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults. 1.1 Describe how to establish respectful, professional relationships with children and young people. It is essential to establish respectful and professional relationships with children and young people. There are certain strategies which enable such a valued and trusted relationship be established. Listening is the most important way in which to establish a respectful, professional relationship.

Children and young people acquire their communication skills by observing how adults interact with each other which will influence how they communicate and behave. Therefore, it is important for the Teaching Assistant, and other carers involved, to act as positive role models. Children and young people need to feel comfortable within their surroundings enabling them to separate more easily from their parents/carers. As they become more emotionally secure they are likely to become more actively involved with play or learning activities.

It is important that we communicate information to one another through positive relationships.
D1 The four aspects of professional practices I have chosen are Attitudes to work, Non-judgemental approaches to practice, Supporting Colleagues and Good time keeping and attendance. D2 Attitudes to work Showing positive attitudes when working in a child care setting can be shown through body language, such as facial expressions (smiling), good posture, relaxed body etc. You must have open body language to look approachable to children. It is also important that you speak in a clear voice with a soft, relaxed tone. Children must be made to feel safe and comfortable with you therefore the way you speak to them and the tone you use is crucial.
