Qn: Explain how GM food can help a country to improve its food security. Food security refers to the availability of food and one's access to it. A household is considered food-secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. According to the World Resources Institute, global per capita food production has been increasing substantially for the past several decades. Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Food security includes at a minimum (1) the ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, and (2) an assured ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (that is, without resorting to emergency food supplies, scavenging, stealing, or other coping strategies). (USDA).Food security also refers to stockpiling for future generations to ensure that they have a safe and sustainable food supply and that there is enough food for every region, for everyone .Some reasons for Food insecurity is natural disasters such as floods and droughts, poorly supported agricultural systems, high birth rates, fragmentation of farmlands, and wars/conflicts. The first factor in which Gm food improves its food security would be by increasing food supply. Nowadays , there are some GM food crops that can produce double outputs, example "super rice "which produces double outputs of grains as compared to normal rice. This causes an increase in food supply, which tend to the thousands of starving or undernourished people in a country (eg. India). In fact, an increase in food supply(eg. corn crops), will eventually result in a decline of food prices in the market due to excessive amounts of that crop, and thus making that crop more affordable in LDCs like India.
