Operations Management – Case 1 EXECUTIVE SHIRTS COMPANY, INC. Case Summary Executive Shirts Company (ESC) is planning to venture into the Customized shirt production segment. For which, it has to bring changes in existing operations. Currently, ESC employs 64 labors who are deployed over 5 major processes – Cutting & Laying (4), Sewing (48), Inspection (4), Ironing (4) and Packaging (4). Apart from the 64 direct labors, additional 4 material handlers were employed. One new machine will be installed for the cutting of Customized shirts, which will be operated by a new labor. To accommodate this change, Mike and Ike have proposed new operational plans. conditions In addition to the requirements to change the operations, the following constraints have to be met: * No. of standard shirts to be made = 16000 * No. of custom shirts to be made = 2000 * Lead time for custom shirts should be less than 5 days Mike’s Plan: 1. Employ an additional labor to handle the new cutting machine 2. The batches of custom shirts will be sewn along with the batches of standard shirts. 3. Reduce batch size to 5 shirts 4. Number of batches per worker increases to 6 Ike’s Plan: 1. To create a separate line for the custom shirts 2. Employ an additional labor to handle the new cutting machine 3. Move one labor each from all sewing operations (along with 12 sewing machines), inspection, ironing (along with 1 ironing machine) and packaging. 4. Batch size for the standard shirts to remain the same at 60. 5. Operations would be carried out on a single shirt by each labor.
