Eric Epperson Sociology 10 3-4-2013 Thinking Sociologically Introduction: Norms are the are the things that people expect in everyday life whether it be how to act in public or what you should eat for breakfast. With that being said, norms are used everyday in media and marketing. Media uses it to sell stories about fear and abnormalities. Marketing uses it to try to sell their products. Most people will not want to buy something that is not the norm and is gonna make them feel seperate from everyone else. This is where I needed to put on my poker face, because honestly, I almost busted out laughing when the idea came to me. After looking at every possible choice at the menu, and asking the cashier about a few certain items. I decided I wanted a number one, or so I thought. That's when I changed my mind and asked for a number 6 instead. This of course wasn't really anything against the norms yet as people change their minds all the time. I also decided I wanted a caramel sundae which would complete my order, or so he thought. Just before he punched in the total, I had a change of heart and was really feeling some chicken nuggets instead. This is the point when I heard the sighs behind me and could practically see their eyes rolling. Even the cashier looked a little flustered, but still granted my request. I'll be honest, I was feeling a little reluctant to continue on to my next phase of the experiment. I knew I was about to get hardcore weird or dumb. Anger and disbelief. Two results I got that I didn't expect was laughter and patience. I noticed that one or two people stayed waiting in line patiently and calmly. Although they were probably hiding their emotions. Other than a select few, this experiment showed that people expect everything to be done in the same way. That there should be no difference from one person to the other. Now that I think of it, I got results from two different perspectives. I got the results from other people, but I also got results from myself. The results I received from myself were those of embarrasment, awkwardness, and even fear. They showed how someone might feel when they know they are doing something against the norms. Although most of the time the person going against the norms will not show those feelings.
