AP Literature Synthesis Essay Why Students SHOULD Go To College. Fredrick Douglass; a former uneducated slave. He was powerless and alone, but because he so eagerly wanted an education, Mr. Douglass became one of America’s Greatest African-American reformers, authors, and statesmen. Knowledge is power. This power was prohibited to many, due to its great results. Slave owners held their slaves back from being educated, as they knew they wouldn’t have the same mentality towards their labor. Americans between the ages 25 to 64, that have attended college, have less than half of the mortality rates than those who stopped education after completing high school (Source C). Therefore, coming to the conclusion that, education is the key to survival and a longer life span. Throughout the years, the mortality rates have increased; interestingly enough to those ho have less than 12 years of education. Americans with higher education (college), have decreased their mortality rates due to their ability to obtain better health insurance and the facility to purchase household items, medicines and personal hygiene products for a better life style. A higher education, changes your life and makes you realize the importance of things you have, provoking an avoidance to the association to various unnecessary events, such as engaging in risky behavior and participating in criminal events (Source C). A higher education level will open your eyes and will unintentionally cause public progress in generations to come as well as decreasing unemployment
