But in today’s society, American high schools have developed into a flawed system that has adverse effects on its students. There are flaws in the inadequate system such as heavy testing and the teaching of irrelevant information. In order to mend these issues the education system needs to be reshaped and refocused to create a more constructive system. This whole cut and dry teaching, what is wrong and what is right in education. But is this to say we are “dumbing down education” to meet standard test and better scores and rankings. The slang expression of “dumbing down” describes the deliberate diminishment of the intellectual level of the content of literature, film, schooling and education, news, and other aspects of culture. I believe that there are many factors why Americans rankings are so low. Education has dumbed down but there are so many different aspects of the situation, fingers pointed on why this has happened.
I can't remember if what I ate for breakfast let alone what I did in elementary. I know I have the basics but I thought that's what the CSTs are for. Lots of kids know the topics in the CAHSEE but are horrible test takers so it messes them up. I think the CAHSEE should be taken off the table. Maybe it could be in the end of middle school.
NCLB set forth a certain criteria to be met, but allowed the states to determine how they would accomplish it. Therefore, each state handles assessment and accountability differently. This makes it hard to show success or failure of the programs. Supporters and critics alike can cite research that supports their opinion. My opinion of NCLB is it is flawed, developmentally inappropriate, ill funded, ←and→ leaving more students, teachers, ←and→ schools behind than ever before because The tests have turned into the objective of classroom instruction rather than the measure of teaching ←and→ learning.
Schools cannot beat the entertainment industry at its own game. What they have to offer students is the chance for intellectual freedom, the power to think for themselves…(Ravitch 163). In school, students are always taught to have an open-mind, how can they have an open-mind when they are being censored? Schools only offer boring, bland topics and cause students to lose interest. Students are so highly influenced by the media that if they aren’t hearing about violence, death, sex or lies, then they have the “don’t care” mentality.
There is also the need for training and the interviewer needs to have a background into education increasing the cost. As a result a small sample will be studied in comparison to other methods like questionnaires. This means that it will not be representative so cannot be generalised to different pupil subcultures. Willis’ qualitative methods enable him to find out about working class pupils resisting attempts to indoctrinate them in school. Theses ‘lads’ formed a counter school subculture that was opposed to school and showed this by flouting school rules for example truanting.
I am writing my research paper to show that the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act is a failure. The NCLB act was brought forth in 2001 by the George W. Bush administration in an effort to assess basic skills and raise national test scores. In this essay I will provide evidence that NCLB is in fact making it harder for children to succeed. Although NCLB has raised test scores, it requires teachers to “teach to the test,” as opposed to teaching children what they actually need to know to succeed, and leaves children unprepared for further education. NCLB also takes the focus off of the arts and puts it all on subjects that are tested by the state.
She states multiple times that the children within the education system are being cheated every day because they are not being forced to read more difficult books. “Such benefits are denied to the young reader exposed only to books with banal, simple-minded moral equations as well as to the student encouraged to come up with reductive, wrong-headed readings of mulitlayered texts” (Prose 97). The reader can blatantly see that Prose thinks negatively of the high school curriculum that today's students face. It seems clear that Prose does not want to hide her personal view or feelings, so she starts her essay out in a way that we do not have to read between the lines to get a sense of how she feels about what she is writing. She uses more emotional language when she says, "The intense loyalty adults harbor for books first encountered in youth is one probable reason for the otherwise baffling longevity of vintage mediocre novels, books that teachers may themselves have read in adolescence"(Prose
Students do not realize that plagiarizing someone else’s work is actually stealing. The educational system does not teach this to students. The educational system should teach that you have to cite an author even if you just take their idea and do not use their exact words. The online companies that generate essays for students should be outlawed. This is making it where students that have a lot of money can easily get by with actually learning how to write correctly.
Bloom has a vision for the modern student. This vision is for the modern student to be wrapped and crushed under the weight of enlightenment and revelation through education. His vision is somewhat blocked from him unfortunately, and might never see it fulfilled. The behemoth that is blocking his vision is the current universal model for educating students, and getting them to their specialization faster. Bloom has problems with the modern university system and how they are teaching the modern student.
