Reaching For Dreams This essay describes the inspiring poem “I, Icarus” by Alden Nowlan, which requires very close reading. Throughout the poem, it seems there is one dominant idea; reaching for dreams. Many stanzas and lines within this poem work together to depict this theme. Not only do the lines in the poem depict the theme, but different poetic devices correlate to the theme as well (freedom and reaching for dreams). Distinct phrases like “willed myself to fly” illustrate the person’s goal of escaping his present condition and reaching for higher goals.
Then the reader recognizes the improper use of the proper nouns “God,” America,” and “I,” because they are not capitalized. This is the first sign that should immediately alert the reader to the possibility that the apparent motive of this poem, pride, might be misleading. There is a colloquial ambiance to this statement in whole; “next to of course god america i.” It is not uncommon for people to speak of their love of something so adamantly, that to justify their feelings it is necessary to express their love of God before all else, but the words “of course” hint at sarcasm. Also, Cummings doesn’t finish his statement until line two, leaving the object of the speakers affection, even if only momentarily, unknown. This initial hesitation is best
These notes serve against the author as they directly challenge. Even if the reader is a philosopher like Kierkegaard, or a learned and intellectual man like Conor Cruise O'Brien, these marginal notes are a challenge and threat for them, to explain more meanings and logical assumptions to the author. There is another meaning by these notes in margins, which is to argue and fight against the author and philosophers of the text. In the second stanza of the poem, Billy also provides a contrasting view to enhance the importance of margins and notes. He begins with considering these notes and comments as “offhand”, “dismissive” and “nonsense”, but he soon explained the importance of such notes for the reader.
Immediately as a reader we are thrown into the theme of uncertainty due to the ambigious title. The word ‘But’ for the start of a poems title gives the reader the idea of Thomas being halfway through a sentance, and therefore they feel as if they have missed something so they do not have a full understanding. The word ‘these’ tells the reader nothing about the poem because it doesn’t refer to anything in particular therefore giving the reader a sense of uncetainty as they had no idea of what they are about to be thrown into by reading this poem. The fact that Thomas has chosen to start the poem with the title is also a clever way of introducing the theme of uncertainty , because even though he is repeating the line, as a reader we still do not have an understanding of this poem. Thomas also uses a wide variety of imagery in order to inflict the theme of uncertainty upon the
He appears warm hearted and eager to end the conflict at first but then you see his real intentions and his real state of mind is focused on “what the people want” and not what is best for Romeo under the given circumstances of the families’ feud. He is materialistic. Tybalt, unlike Capulet, has no sense of discretion. It would be best to take Romeo aside and quietly tell him to be on his way. So far it appears to be that the Prince, Capulet, and Tybalt don’t know how to handle situations.
The poet did not say “having sex”, “hooking up” or “screwing”. He used the term love because that is what is felt. Despite this love, there will be facets of your partner’s past that you will not really wish to understand, just as you do not wish for them to know
A commonly overlooked, yet highly influential variable in both literature and everyday life is the concept of an assumption. Even though assumption seem almost like an instinct, Sir Thomas Wyatt’s They Flee From Me explores the notion of human assumption to demonstrate the influence and power this concept has on both love and everyday life. The first and second stanzas of They Flee From Me immediately presents the reader with somewhat of an interpretative quandary. Words such as “tame” and “wild” are utilized to describe the subject of Wyatt’s poem—a character simply referred to as “They”. Because of these specific terms, the reader questions exactly who or what the poem is actually referring to.
Both martin Baynton’s short story, ‘Leap of Faith’ and Frost’s poem ‘Out, Out-‘, clearly demonstrate the inevitable and fast- paced change in life, as well as the many hardships which it brings with it and in doing so, reminds us of the importance of change in one’s life, how to follow through and to cherish it. Although both texts are different in forms, times, and people they both convey their ideas in an interesting way through narrative and the use of similar techniques. Frost’s poem ‘Out, Out –‘ is a dramatic monologue which captures the faint candle of life and its ability’ to go out in a split second, emphasising the suddenness of change as well as the pain and hardships we need to follow through in order to continue. Change, it is everywhere around us, an inevitability that strikes at anytime, this starkness of change is strongly and clearly presented throughout this text as the atmosphere and situations change, where tensions begins to build and where the suddenness of change comes into play. ‘Little – less – nothing!
Symbolism in “The Cask of Amontillado” The symbolism throughout Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” constantly pair similar ideas that contradict each other. The characters are unaware of the symbolic details in conversations or events that occur throughout the story. The reader may find him/her self siding with Montresor since we have all been insulted at one time or another, but that doesn’t constitute revenge to the point of killing a person. Literature containing symbolism can be interpreted or viewed differently by the reader. Poe put much effort and thought into the details of his literature, he painted a descriptive picture for the reader matter how dark and dreary.
