An Analysis of Nursing Theory In the Film: Wit Daniel Foytlin Kean University Abstract The Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit, by Margaret Edson, was artfully converted to film in 2001. The story details the life and reflections of a brilliant, uncompromising, yet cold-hearted English professor, as she endures an experimental treatment for cancer. The film also provides a stark view of the medical community and its various approaches toward end of life care. The analysis of the film discusses the contrast between various Nursing Models, as viewed through the eyes of the patient and her reactions toward each model. Wit is the story of Vivian Bearing (Emma Thompson), a doctor of English literature, who has recently been diagnosed with stage four, metastatic ovarian cancer.

The stroke has left Marianne unresponsive and without an advanced directive the healthcare team has no way of knowing what her desires would be for the plan of care. Her husband and children are in disagreement with which direction to go in regards to her care. The ANA code of ethics has provisions in place to assist in a decision for this case.

They “feel betrayed.” (337) However, the partient knows the “truthful information, humanely conveyed, helps patients cope with illness: helps them tolerate pain better, need less medication, and even recover faster after surgery.”(337) I suggest that partients know their conditions immediately. If partient’s situation is terminal means almost the end of life. That will help them spend their remaining time carefully, and they don’t have doubts during the rest of the life.

The medical model of disability is somewhat strange and hard to understand. Judgment is based off of the person’s development be it mental or physical. When these judgments are made, people are classified as a problem to be fixed or just as an injured person who has no hope in fitting in. People with a disability are seen and said to be a personal problem to the family.
