Ethical Dilemma Heather Kyzer CJA 324: Ethics in Criminal Justice September2, 2012 Janet Evans Ethical Dilemma Penn state university is well known university throughout this country. The past several months Penn States has fell to shame, disgrace, hurt, and the loss of a reputation that was so well respected. The controversy was horrible to anyone reading about the sexual abuse scandal that was brought up on former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky (Yanda, 2012). There is an ethical dilemma brewing because this fine school of academics and profound sports areas are being held to unjustifiable punishments. NCAA is following Utilitarianism by doing what is best for everyone as a whole, but the realization is that no matter what kind of fine or punishment that they place on the university it is not going to undo what has been done. According to Huff Post, “PSU’s campus community is numb. The students suggested the NCAA sanctions were worse than the death penalty.” The nature of this dilemma will haunt people involved and not for years to come at this university. The NCAA made the most ethical decision that they could regard the severity of the scandal. The NCAA made their decision to prove a point and attempt to make right to the victims and their families involved in this circumstance. The idea of the university athletic department could have been made to pay financial restitution to the victims instead of taking away games. The family of Jerry Sandusky could have been charged with defamation of character on the university by his actions. Removing the statue of Joe Peterno should have never occurred because he earned that title as well as those young men who won the games. The outcome is still the same in regard that no matter how much you fine or punish this university the actions taken upon these victims can never be taken back. The outcome by the NCAA has sent a message to other universities and colleges to prove that punishments are far worse than could ever be expected. The outcome to the students of Penn State is that they are shamed and embarrassed for what happened at their beautiful campus, but if the NCAA would have thought about the students beforehand they would have seen what all this was causing.
