Western Stereotypes of Hawaii I few years ago, during my junior year of high school I went on a trip to Washington, D.C. While on that trip I met a girl from Illinois who was so awed by the fact that I had come from Hawaii. She started asking me many questions about Hawaii. She asked if I lived in a grass hut or how large were the waves that I surfed because to her, everyone in Hawaii knew how to surf. She also asked if our Santa Clause comes in on a canoe wearing an Aloha Shirt and surf shorts. She also mentioned how she wanted to visit Hawaii so she could meet some cute Hawaiian boys. One of the main things that draw people to the islands of Hawaii is the beauty and the weather. One of the main stereotypes that westerners have of Hawaii is the weather. They see Hawaii as a place with no seasons and a place where it is summer all year long. When westerners imagine the islands they think of a place that is always full of sunshine and warmth. Many imagine a place where they could go and get the perfect tans. Because many of them come to Hawaii with the stereotype of the weather, they are often very disappointed when it rains during their visit. They never imagined that it could rain in Hawaii. What many of them do not know is that some of the rainiest places in the United States are in Hawaii. A study done by the San Francisco based Weatherbill, Inc. listed Mobile, Alabama as the top rainiest city but went on to say, “Several cities in Hawaii and Alaska actually receive more than 100 inches of rain a year, but were not included in the studies”.
