According to an article in Slate On, the poor and low income people in our society are more overweight than the wealthy. This psychological behavior transcends to other cultures as well, telling me that people don’t really want equality but superiority. Regardless of the parts of the world you are from, someone always wants to feel superior to someone else. Though Americans did inherit the “wanting more” trait from the frontier opportunities, there were an influx of other nationalities flocking to America for the same opportunities (82). Likewise, they too have adopted the “hunger for more” mentality because they are financially able to adopt the psychological want.
One of my main takeaways from this topic is that money isn’t the best motivator. According to Mayo’s Hawthorne effect, employees feel more motivated when their efforts are recognized, and this can be achieved through bonuses for example. However, this can increase individualism as employees will focus on outperforming their peers. Intrinsic motivation helps create loyal employees who are more satisfied on a personal level. An example of this could be social security benefits.

There are currently thirty-seven million Americans who are classified as being "in poverty" (Rector 2). Many Americans are classified below the line of poverty, but in retrospect to the rest of the world, Americans seem far from poor. America is considered to be upon the most prominent and successful nations in the world; so, why is over a tenth of our population deemed as "poor" by our government?
Most of the things these immigrants do in the U.S. is illegal; avoid taxes, work illegally, live illegally, etc. The biggest problem with them is that a majority of them do not pay taxes. Households with an illegal immigrant as the head of the house only pay 1/3 of the federal taxes, or ¼ as much as a legal household. The debt that illegal immigrants cause to the economy is far greater than the good they do. As Steven A. Camarota tells in The High Cost of Cheap Labor: Illegal Immigration and the Federal Budget, “Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes.
The effect that this recession had on society is monstrous. It essentially paved the way for female run industries, and shed a new light on what it means to be a man nowadays. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a man wanting to provide for his family, it would almost come as second nature to most people. Statistical information previously stated is evidence in itself to prove the facts that men did have a higher unemployment rate than women, but it is effect on society that became argumentative. Without a doubt, both men and women are equally just as hard working- they aim to achieve the same goals of providing for their family and living a comfortable financially stable life.
