Thesis /Introduction The use of powerful visual imagery in both John Misto’s play The Shoehorn Sonata and the film The Hurt Locker By Kathryn Bigelow introduce responders to situations where people are exposed to harsh and challenging experiences. From these texts responders understand that humans can become very brutal during times of war.
Bridie also carries the belief that Sheila retrieved the quinine by exchanging the shoehorn but creates much conflict internally in Sheila and has much strain on their friendship. In the end though, it comes to represent the enduring nature of Bridie’s and Sheila’s friendship and love. A major theme in “The Shoe Horn Sonata” is war. War is a time of devastation and destruction; a time where people are forced to suffer from traumatic and horrendous experiences. These experiences of war can last a life time and can affect victims through post-traumatic stress developed due to the experience.
How does Wilfred Owen present war though his poems? Wilfred Owen produce a poem called dulce et decorum est. In this poem Wilfred Owen explores the many horrors and cruel ordeals of World War One. He does this by using horrific imagery and techniques such as vivid imagery and dramatic descriptions. Owen then seeks to convince the reader that it is not honourable or right to die for your country, as the title of the poem suggests so.
He uses the stories in his short story as an example—almost like a template to show his point of the importance of telling a true war story—to show the true depth of the event. He uses his friend’s stories in the field, telling them in 3rd person as if he were right next to the reader listening to them for the very first time. This creates many main characters that each have individual traits that come out in their stories. The one most sympathized with is a character named Bob Kiley, but everyone called him Rat. In his story, he loses his best friend to a booby trap in the mountains of Vietnam.

Paul was living life as a civilian for eighteen years, not knowing the horrors of the world, and as a young adult in the war, he witnessed his first horror, such as his first bombing, his first explosion, first exposure to numerous of dead bodies etc, which will traumatize him in future civilian life since one does not simply forget the first raw, gory images. The age of eighteen can be considered the age of a young adult that is still growing and experiencing life, and when teengaers are thrown into the abyss of war, it prevents young soldiers from striving and progressing; as being an adult is heavily weighed on an adolescent
The diegetic sound of the bullets hitting against the soldier’s chest, helmets and the metal of the boat provokes an emotional response from the audience. As well as that, visual visceral imagery was a technique widely used in the opening scene in representing the true nature and horror of war which can be related to the days of torture in the medieval times, when people were eviscerated for their crimes and wrongdoings. The experience created through language establishes a uniquely graphic story that initiates a personal response to society. Thus, our and understandings of society can be enhanced and extracted through elements of distinctively visual. Many composers use various techniques to shape our individual perception and interpretation through the experiences and opinions of others. Through the hardship of war, sexism and the importance of relationships, this notion is depicted within John Misto’s play The Shoe-Horn Sonata and the related poetry Vergissmeinnict by Keith Douglas which demonstrates the hardships of war, Suburban Sonnet by Gwen Harwood which demonstrates sexism and South of My Days by Judith Wright. Critically, however, it is the difficultly told accounts of the atrocities of Chelmno that shape’s the reader’s emotional responses to, and intellectual understanding of, Briar Rose * Gemma uses the story of Sleeping Beauty to recount her Holocaust experience * Josef’s’s frank narrative recounting of what happened at Chelmno reveals the brutal truths of the Holocaust to Rebecca and the reader. * The purpose of the multiple narratives is to provide the reader with different perspective not only on the horrors of the Holocaust but also its legacy – its impact on the survivors. STYLISTIC DEVICES: * Yolen uses many stylistic devices in this novel. She begins the novel with Gemma telling her three young granddaughters the story of Sleeping Beauty. Each of the odd-chapters in the ‘Home’ section is italicised to alert the readers to the fact that these are flashbacks to the past, that is, Rebecca’s childhood.
The two texts offer readers and viewers different insights into the nature of war. Both texts use very graphic imagery which is disturbing and often macabre to illustrate the confronting reality of war. Annaud utilises visual imagery and music to help create an effectively realistic mise-en-scene throughout the film. Annaud affirms the importance of hope and love whilst demonstrating the brutal political nature of war. In “Fly Away Peter” Malouf constructs characters to show how war affects people.
