More than 1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water (Lawrence & Weber, 2011, p. 43). Especially in the developing countries, with poor water management it contributes to increasing malnutrition and disease, a losing of biodiversity and agricultural production, rising food prices, reducing economic growth and social stability, that leading to conflicts over water resources. The major source for of the Coca-Cola Company’s (TCCC) products is water. Even the company’s CEO admits “that unless the communities where the company operated had access to water, they haven’t got a business” (Lawrence & Weber, 2011, p. 43). Coca-Cola and its bottlers using 80 billion gallons of water every year worldwide; in which two fifths goes into finished beverages.
This was followed by a cold spell in August and September. Because of this weather, corn and oats could not ripen, and wheat and rye completely failed, creating a smaller harvest than usual (29-32). Within months, the whole country was hungry. Prices had risen on what food was available. The King tried implementing several policies to increase the food supply, such as price controls on livestock and restrictions on the production of ales and other products made from the limited supply of grain.
The push factors of their homeland- no arable land for crops, contaminated water, and no money- caused the farmers and their families to leave .Then California’s pull factors, such as harvest labor job opportunities, attracted these refugees of depression. All of these families that come from the same region and are migrating to California are an example of a chain migration. Also, since it stayed in the United States, it could be known as an internal migration. Inter- regional could also be another name for this migration because the farmers migrated from one region to a different region but remained in the United States. However, due to such massive migration of people to California, there was a huge decline in employment rates, shortage in work, and low wages.
Causes: Before the accident, Bhopal and the surrounding area’s had been affected by drought, and so famers had less produce to sell, and less of a profit to buy the pesticide ‘Sevin’ being produced at the Bhopal factory. Boxes of the unsold ‘Sevin’ were being returned to the factory, and it was becoming a financial liability to Union Carbide. So in an effort to reduce costs, almost a third of the work force was made redundant. This made safety checks less frequent and less thorough. Maintenance workers were not using the equipment called a slip-blind plate to clean the pipes, which is what made it possible for water to enter Tank 610 in the first place.
Due to which, the groundwater tables in North China Plain have fallen by 10 to 50 meters in the last ten years. Water shortages are intensified by high levels of water pollution. The total wastewater discharge in the year 2007 was 75 billion meter cube, which is more than twice that was in 1980. The discharge levels are making it extremely difficult to maintain the quality of water and are threatening drinking water supplies. More than half of China’s major cities don’t satisfy with national drinking water quality standards.
In the book, Bloom said “it’s easier for today’s children to waste food because they are so removed from its origins.” The reason why we waste food easily is we don’t have the chance to plant, water, or nurse the plants by ourselves, so we don’t know how hard it is to plant and grow the food. After reading this book, I feel so sorry for what I did every day by wasting my food and I have decided to do something better such as ordering less amount of food and take any leftovers home and cook them with other ingredients to make them into new dish, instead of throwing them into the trash can. If we can continue doing this, food wastes can be decreased. Also, we should care about our environment by not tossing the food into the trash because wasting food can negatively impact our environment, which will reduce our natural resources. For
The water in communities should not only satisfy domestically, but for agriculture and industrial use as well. As the population continues to grow, clean water is being a scarce source for a developing world. Experts state that, “Over a billion people still have no decent water supply and 2.4 billion do not have proper sanitation; over 60% of global ill health can be linked to water. Without tackling these problems, little progress can be made on other development issues (e.g. children required by the family to fetch water several miles cannot attend school, sick people cannot work, infant mortality will remain very high)” (Should Water).
Droughts, floods and disease are all made worse by global warming. My region's poverty limits the ability of my family to recover and adapt to these conditions. In 2006 the government declared a state of emergency after two and a half years of drought. Lack of rain has resulted in our food dying. My father can’t grow healthy crops to sell anymore.
This has seriously jeopardized the food supply, leaving millions in danger of starvation. “(-fao.org/news/global/GW0105.) “Not only is food scarce, but each day children as young as six are sent to collect water from taps or wells up to three hours away. Villagers say that up to 50 children have died this year due to a lack of nutrition. The drought also hit hard in the south part of the country, where British troops are fighting an insurgency.
These natural disaster has leaving people struggling (to find food, suffering from malnutrition and selling their assets just to survive. Their crops and livestock are no longer existed due to the drought issue. Over 30 years, these had become the worst drought ever. The nationwide drought emergency in Namibia, declared by the government in May. These issues came just months after the main harvest season, a time when people are usually busy storing food for the dry
