American Pride “Will you proudly stand and say the pledge of allegiance….” I hear these words every morning before our morning announcements boom over the intercom system at Eufaula High School. I, along with most of my classmates, stand to pledge allegiance to our country; however, some of my classmates choose not to stand. Their choice not to stand immediately takes my mind to the stormy beaches of Normandy, the sandy deserts of Afghanistan, and the humid jungles of Vietnam. The wars fought by our U.S. military on these foreign lands preserved my right to stand for the pledge of allegiance as well as my classmates’ rights not to stand for the pledge of allegiance. The U.S Soldier’s creed in which all U.S. army service men and women must memorize and recite says, “I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.” The American way of life that these soldiers protect daily is our freedom of choice. Some Americans choose to sit during the pledge. Some Americans choose to drive planes into buildings. Some Americans choose to burn flags. Personally, I cannot see how a soldier can step another foot on to a battle field or ship to protect the rights of these Americans who choose to display such acts, that in my opinion, go against what America stands for. However, that is where a soldiers’ pride amazes me. Regardless of an individual’s color, creed, or belief, an American soldier fights to protect the freedom of all Americans – not only the ones who believe as they believe. A soldier in the Afghan desert slept last night with flea collars on his ankles and wrists. That is pride for his country. A soldier on the beaches of Normandy stormed the enemy knowing he would probably die. That is pride for his country. A soldier in the jungles of Vietnam slept countless nights in a swamp while hiding from the enemy. That is pride for his
