“Soldier’s Home” Independence is the state of being free from the control of another, which not many are able to obtain. In the short story “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway, the main character’s actions underlies this theme. The short story begins with a Vietnam veteran, Krebs, who is trying once again to re-incorporate to his hometown after being away so many years at war. After living in foreign countries for so long, Krebs has grown unaccustomed to his town’s social aspect and has no real direction that he wants to pursue for his future. Krebs had this routine of watching the many girls that walked down his street, but never actually wanting to talk to any. He has done this every day since coming home from the war. The conservative town has Krebs begging for something different, something that doesn’t feel like a “pattern” of a never ending circle. He has outcast “[girls]” from his life with the excuse that “you do not need a girl,” Krebs doesn’t want to continue this legacy of a picture perfect family, in which he has to be the best son, brother and boyfriend.
