Equality Versus Fairness

Equality should be for every person and no one should be limited the opportunity of receiving the benefits that is entitled to any human being. However, the level in which most believe is “true equality” isn’t very fair at all, and would never allow another human being to reach their full positional or reap the rewards of his success properly. The term equality should instead be explained as ‘something that allows all human beings to get ahead while helping others reaches success’ and not explained as everyone’s is ‘owed the same thing.’ Firstly, supporters of fairness like journalist Ellen Rufft believe that people will do no good by allowing everyone to receive the same in everything. [“Equal pay for equal work” is certainly an accepted standard in our society, but can a system be considered really fair that ignores the difference between one person and six people living on the same wage?’] (2,Rufft). In this quote she points out that the system that most people dream of as being an equal society may be much worse. Not allowing people to get ahead and keeping them in the same spot blindly handicaps everyone. [“ Some people work harder for what they have now, and to scream ‘it’s not fair’ or ‘we’re not equal because he’s rich and I’m middle class’ is like screaming ‘She bakes a cake and nicely decorated it and won first prize for her hard work, but I didn’t decorate or properly cook my cake, why didn’t I get a prize.’”] (12) However, people like “Roslin Song believes that the meaning of equality comes with the guarantee of redistribution of wealth. [ Having equal pay is difficult seeing as many different people want to do many different things, however, many of the people who make it past succeeding should give back to the people who brought them to the top in the first place.”] (199.)
