Monique Velez Dr. LoVerde Paper # 3 English 1-A WC 725 The Apprentices, The Prisoner: The Self-Education of Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X The two great writers known as Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X are two great articulate speakers and writer. Their talents should be recognized for inspiration. Their stories are unique, however similar in many ways. Both men came from poverty and had to face their challenges that they faced in life. Their desire to educate themselves through their own unique learning styles.
He says that he is there to help and he wants his son to take his experiences and learn from them. Through rhetorical questions, he informs about the education he wants his son to have. Carefully, he develops the assertion that it is important to know about a whole topic, not just a little piece of it. This reveals Chesterfield’s value that when his son reaches beyond his peers, he will gain pleasure for being the best educated so far, but what Chesterfield really wants his son to learn is that you really accomplish nothing until you master what your learning. Therefore, Lord Chesterfield strongly develops his ideal values through rhetorical strategies.
The theme was also one of the key elements in which made this short story so magnificent because it had explained the two morals. Those were one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and also to respect what you have and be thankful for it. Surprisingly an old man named Lemon Brown had taught these two valuable lessons to a young boy who had by chance entered the building he lived in. The figurative language also plays a major role in “The Treasure of Lemon Brown”. It does this by adding taste and rhythm to it, especially the personification.
He clearly lets us know that he is still a work in progress and God continues to work on him. Mr. Harvey acknowledges his mistakes from his past but he strives to help others. He tries to be an example and change the lives of others. One of the ways that he encourages and gives back to society is through his mentoring program for young men. The mission of the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program for Young Men is to share, teach and demonstrate the principles of manhood to young men, enabling them to achieve their dreams and become men who are strong, responsible and productive.
His only downfall was his anger problems and always being in trouble in school. He did what he was supposed to do at home. He was an energetic healthy little boy who watched wwe wrestling on TV every Friday, Monday, and Sunday. He made the goal to get older and become stronger and better then the superstars he watched. He did 10 pushups a day and 25 sit ups to try and get a six pack.
I’ve had an experience in which the minutes I took weren’t written effectively, therefore everyone ended up going in different directions & then had to meet again for the same original purpose. Whereas if the meeting minutes are written well, everyone gets the same notes and are all on the same page. Everything that I’ve learned in school and even on my job has helped me in my adult life to be able to write resumes, cover letters, applications, etc. Even in my personal life as a mom, everyday my son comes to me for pen and paper. Because He’s only 23 months, He scribbles all over the paper but I still feel that it’s my obligation as a parent to take his hand and guide him.
In the next few chapters of Going Up the River, Hallinan talks about family visitation programs, profits made by the prisons, and the ongoing competition between huge corporations in the prison marketplace. The first story that struck me was that of Grady Mitchell, an inmate serving life without parole at Washington State Reformatory. Hallinan speaks to Grady about his visitations with his family at the prison. Grady gets to spend two weekends a month with his wife and children and tells of how little things like helping his son make flash cards for a school report are the things that mean the most to him. Grady holds a steady job making jackets and other garments for the Eddie Bauer company, and states that he earned approximately $5,000
Ask yourself if you believe in Malcome X storie?. It’s better to have loved than to not have loved at all. Yes I do. I believe he was telling some pretty convincing stories about himself and his life. And how he grew up?.
So Malcolm starts reading the dictionary everyday for hours. Then Malcolm would copy every word from the dictionary page right down to the punctuation. He would read it back top himself over and over. Eventually Malcolm had copied that entire dictionary. Malcolm read books in the jail’s library so frequently that the librarian would let him take a few extra books back to his cell.
(NEA Today).” Seven hours is a lot of the day working all day and we never stop five days a week and we have homework which is bad for us, it makes us tired.” Decades ago, the American Educational Research Association released this statement: “Whenever homework crowds out social experience, outdoor recreation, and creative activities, and whenever it usurps time that should be devoted to sleep (Scholastic news).” Kids need to play outside and have a social life they need to enjoy their free time but there is no free time because of all the homework. Kids through 6-12th and college need less homework because we already have seven hours of
