The audience of these symbols are the sick, wounded and the mentally afflicted. These are signs that are rhetorical devices because they are strongly associated with healing and sought after help in time of an emergency or trauma. The crosses are very economic because they transmit information without creating language barriers. The signs are graphical and universally understood without any written language being attached to them. The use of colour is also crucial in that for instance the colour red as in Fig 3 above gives a red alert that a person has been wounded and is in need for immediate help. The colour draws attention to the both the patient and the health care giver. To achieve the purpose of the assignment I will discuss each sign separately. In Fig 1 is the Dove Cross that symbolises tranquillity, peace and a healthy state of mind. The association and connotation of a dove is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit in the Christian culture brings healing to human kind on behalf of Jesus. The cross has denotation associations with salvation because Jesus Christ saved everyone by dying on the cross. The green leaf in the dove’s mouth symbolises life as is culturally demonstrated in the story of Noah where the dove brought a good message of life. The colour white of the dove stands for purity and health. In Fig 2 is the Maltese cross which is a medical symbol in many medical organisations. This cross is a symbol made of two white doves on a red cross. This cross is used by Tokushkai, a general hospital group in Japan. The connotation of the red line
