During the Battle of Stalingrad, many Soviet men went to war for the motherland. These men attempted to drive the Nazi forces out of their home. The city warfare and brutal climate took a toll on the Germans. But thanks to one man, the battle of Stalingrad was won by the Soviets. Vassili Zaitsev, the protagonist in the film, Enemy at the Gates was the real man who helped with a turning point in the fight for the city of Stalingrad. The movie displays the challenges of the Red army, but mostly, the challenges faced by a sniper or by Zaitsev himself. One challenge that Zaitsev faced as a sniper was the physical exhaustion that it takes. Zaitsev had to stay awake for hours on end, hunting his enemy. The human body can only handle so many days without sleep. On top of the exhaustion that he faces, a sniper must stay still for an ungodly amount of time. This and the exhaustion cause Zaitsev to fall asleep and lose his enemy at one point during the film. The difficulty of having to stay still has a huge impact on a sniper. If a sniper is not still he is in grave danger and if he is still, he might lose the shot that could settle everything. Another challenge that Vassili Zaitsev must deal with is the emotional toll that it takes to be a sniper. In the film, Zaitsev loses almost all of his partners. Unlike the older Russian sniper, Zaitsev lacks what it takes to become detached from his partners. He constantly has to lose friends and continue on. Zaitsev also has to not think about his enemies. He realizes that he is making women widowed when he shoots someone or t6hat he might be creating orphans. However he must detach himself and carry on to protect his country. Another emotional problem that Zaitsev faces is not having to opportunity to create a strong physical or emotional relationship with a female.
