Manley Comp II Rough draft/Research paper Emma Goldman started out as an immigrant worker, and eventually became one of the most powerful Anarchists in the nation who spoke out against the oppression of the working class and women alike. She traveled around the nation giving speeches urging workers and women to break free of the shackles society has placed upon them. Eventually she was deported, but Doctorow writes about her with a certain admiration, exemplified through Tateh’s great respect for her personal courage and integrity (44). They realized that Goldman spoke passionately about freedom of speech; thus, creating this First Amendment dispute at the University of Cal. One letter included a quotation of Goldman from the early 1900’s. Although this argument is one of many disputes and questions as to whether, Freedom of speech is acceptable anytime in the classroom. The credentials for this article by standard are really low and unusable. Cal Berkley gives no citations as an agreeable standard of terms to use in debate and competition. Certainly, it contains sex and violence, characteristics of any age, but its strength is in its use of language, its power is in its structure. Ragtime accurately reflects the turn of the century in the “awakening” of the consciousness of women, the rush towards industrialism, the struggle for racial equality, and the horror of working conditions for immigrants. I can see myself pulling a tad bit of information from this book just because it talks about the racial issues that was faced back then that caused a lot of controversial issues. Would I recommend this book to others? I would be cautious to whom I recommend this to, because of the censorship, and the controversial issues; but, it does help with certain
