Basic Concepts and Terminologies of Electrical Power System Energy is an important requirement for us. It is extremely difficult to even think the life without electricity. Think about all the luxuries the discovery of electricity has brought us like television, radio and lights; our daily survival depends upon energy. Insufficient power (energy) supply is one of the main causes of crippling economies. Strong power generation industry indicates strong economic growth and prosperity for any nation. Electricity is generated from the motion of tiny charged atomic particles called electrons and protons: Protons = + & Electrons = - There are various types of Sources used to make electricity, here are some of them: Thermal, Geothermal, Nuclear, Hydroelectric, Solar & Wind We get electricity by energy from one of the sources is converted by machines at the power plant to Electricity and then put onto the Electric Power Grid Figure1 illustrates the electric Power Grid which are: • Power Plants • Transmission Lines • Substations • Power Lines • Transformers • Electrical Wiring and Circuit Box Figure 1: Electric Power Grid An electric power system is a network of electrical components used to supply, transmit and use electric power. An example of an electric power system is the network that supplies a region's homes and industry with power - for sizable regions, this power system is known as the grid and can be broadly divided into the generators that supply the power, the transmission system that carries the power from the generating centers to the load centers and the distribution system that feeds the power to nearby homes and industries.
