Effects of Makeup “Whether I'm wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I'm always the same person inside” (Gaga). People need to realize the damaging effects of makeup caused from ingredients, expiration date, and over usage. Primarily, makeup contains ingredients most people are not aware of. Makeup companies put many disgusting things in their makeup products. Studies show Clinique, L’Oreal, MAC, Neutrogena, and Maybelline liquid foundations all contain traces of sodium chloride, algae extract, or dimethicone (Chasen). These can dry out facial skin, break the skin out, or even cause the face to swell. Most blushes, such as MAC, contain talc. Talc is a mineral that soaks into the skin and can clog the pores, causing acne. Certain mascara brands contain mercury. Mercury can harm the body by causing anything from skin reactions to neurotoxicity issues. Also, most mascara contains bronopol, and in vast amounts, can eventually cause blindness (Hartmantell). Out of thirty-three brands of lipsticks, sixty-one percent contained lead (Malkan). Lead is a neurotoxin and when exposed to the body for long periods of time it can cause health issues such as “lowered IQ, reduced school performance, and increased aggression” (Gavin). On the other hand, when makeup expires, there can be harmful effects. For instance, using expired makeup can result in swelling of the face or acne. Therefore, foundation has to be replaced at least every six months. Keeping it cool will help keep the substances inside from melting and separating. If not changed, the oils in foundation build up and can cause acne (Brain). Blush has to be replaced every six to nine months. The brushes that go along with them need to either be washed or thrown away too. Not changing blushes can cause build up in pores and lead to red spots.
