Media has a very big impact on our lives today; so much that it is everywhere. Before exploring the effects, we must understand the true meaning of digital media. According to the Business Dictionary, the technical term is as follows: “the different platforms on which people communicate electronically.” This includes: cell phones, discs, computers, videos, books, games, internet, television, video games, interactive media and more. In our growing world of communication, people are constantly looking for an easier and new way to use expression. The new wave of communication is now through various forms of digital media. Children are exposed to forms of digital media at very young ages. In the beginning, parents believe that exposing their child to media helped their child learn to do things, such as reading, earlier than most other children. As the child gets older, parents see that media begins to greatly affect their lives in ways they do not like. Although digital media makes forms of expression easier and more convenient, psychologists believe that it has negative impacts on health, behavior, and school grades. In the article, If Your Kids Are Awake, They’re Probably Online, the Kaiser Family Foundation study showed that the average young American spends practically every waking minute using a smart phone, computer, television, or other electronic device. Forty-seven percent of these media users had grades of mostly Cs or lower compared to twenty-three percent of those who use media for three hours a day or less. The forty-seven percent of heavy media users were also more likely than the twenty-three percent to say that they were bored of sad, they got in trouble, did not get along well with their parents and were not happy in school.
