Teachers have a huge responsibility towards students; their main aim is to ensure that all students have the chance to perform to the best of their ability in the classroom. A powerful tool that if used well and done correctly by a teacher, could potentially change a student’s time in school to be a positive, beneficial and fulfilling educational experience. This tool is known as assessment; according to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD, 2009) “assessment is the ongoing process of gathering, analyzing and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgments to improve future student learning”. Assessments have many purposes and need to meet requirements for a number of sources, they are important for teachers, students, parents and schools. There are three types of assessments that are used in the classroom (DEECD, 2009): 1. Assessment FOR learning which is used as a formative assessment tool and designed for teachers to work with students from the beginning of the learning process to identify what a student needs to maximize and extend his knowledge and how this will be achieved. 2. Assessment AS learning, this type of practice is very important because it allows a student to take charge and be involved in the assessment process, through self reflection and ‘monitoring their progress to inform their future learning goals’. 3. Assessment OF learning, this is used by teachers frequently in the classroom, the teacher uses information and results from tests, assignments and other forms of assessment that they have gathered across the term. They then make a judgment about the level of achievement of a student against goals and standards set by the Australian National Curriculum. This type of assessment is used when teachers communicate to parents and other bodies about how much a student has learned and usually takes
