Economic Development and Political Transformation During the time period of 1607-1750, numerous changes were occurring. From all of the colonies developing in this era, Massachusetts and Virginia were the most interesting in how their economic development affected political transformation in various ways; despite all the differences Massachusetts and Virginia held in their economies and governments, there were also many similarities. In 1629 a group of Puritans secured a royal charter to form the Massachusetts Bay Company. Puritans, separating themselves from the Church of England and following strict moral rules, proposed to establish a settlement in Massachusetts with Boston being at the center. Joint stock companies such as the Virginia Company of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Company sponsored and provided the financial means for settlements, like the Bay Colony to emerge. The majority of the people living there were families or groups, and the merchant class, which brought numerous trades to the area. These groups which settled together, created more population per mile, which led to more towns. Employment included mercantile, fishing, fur trading, ship building, lumbering, and small farms. Influenced by the Puritan work ethic, which emphasized hard work, frugality, and diligence; this put more money in the hands of more self- sufficient people. However, the mercantile elite did have their hand in political development as their influence and monies helped to shape regulation. Triangular trade also played a role as the exportation of goods between three ports and regions, helped commerce to grow. Town governments which conducted important business were inclusive for all male property holders. All “freemen”, adult males who belonged to the Puritan congregations were allowed to vote.
