Child study project Alfredo Sanchez Psych 150 Professor Dugan January 22, 2014 Introduction I had the pleasure today of observing a young 5-year old Hispanic boy at his home. The child seems to have a tight-knit family, with both parents taking an active part in the child's daily life. The child has an older and younger brother, ages 8 and 4, making him the middle child of the family. The boy lives with both parents, but spends more time with his mother than her father. I thought it would be of best interest, in this case, to interview the mother and ask her few questions about their lifestyle with the boy, what his particular strengths and weaknesses are and various milestones the boy was able to reach throughout the course

Reflection on Middle Childhood Middle Childhood is a period of time in which children gain a sense of self and build on cognitive abilities learned in Early Childhood. Sigmund Freud labeled this time in a child’s life the “latency stage” because sexual and aggressive urges are repressed, and possibly because physical growth is slow and steady. The subject of my middle childhood interview was Lisa, a nine-year-old Caucasian female in her home located in Highland Park, as well as a twenty minute observation across the street at a neighborhood park. She is an only child that lives with her mother in an apartment and visits her father in Stephenville twice a month, as well as two months every summer. Lisa’s mother, a teacher in DISD, divorced the father four years ago and intentionally moved to Highland Park for the quality of the school district.

Description of Setting: The observation session began on Tuesday May 7, 2013, at approximately 10:00 AM in Gerber, California; the preschool has 2 adults and 8-10 kids. All the children were in line waiting to exit out the back door to the playground.
My son Dakota was breastfeed for his first six months of life and I chose this option due to the severe allergies his father and I have. Dakota fortunately did not acquire any of the allergies that could have been hereditary, thankfully. However, for convenience I let Dakota sleep by my side in between feedings. Although this method gave me considerable ease with the feedings I found the following statement to have been an unknown benefit as well. “It is interesting to note that both breastfeeding and sleeping with parents induce shorter bouts of sleep and less sound sleep than the alternatives (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000).
