Observation: Early Childhood Lifespan Phase Willetta Hampton BSHS 342 University of Phoenix August 19, 2013 Observation: Early Childhood Lifespan Phase Child Observation Subjects 5 year old boy (foster child living in the same house as friend’s youngest brother) and 9 year old boy (friend’s youngest brother). These observations took place in the children’s home and my home on the weekend. I spent nearly 6 hours with each boy. I observed each boy separately and viewed how each of the boys interacted with the parents and 14 year old boy in their household, my friend (30 year old woman), and how each of the boys interacted with one another. I noticed many things during my observations that were mentioned in our course readings concerning physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. 5 Year Old Boy His ethnic background is African American. I learned that he had been in several foster homes prior to being placed with my friend’s parents. Despite not having had a prior consistent, stable household, I found him to be very at home, familiar, and happy with his surroundings. Development When I arrived at the children’s home, he immediately greeted me with “Hey Willetta!” and gave me a tight hug. While he has lost a couple teeth, he has a couple baby teeth remaining. This seems to affect his speech, but not his confidence to speak. Not having an accelerated growth of permanent teeth is normal according to our readings as such acceleration is typically associated with children that are overweight or obese and he is quite a thin boy (Berk, 2010). I noticed that he wasn’t wearing shoes or socks. He wore green camouflage shorts and a black tank top. After hugging me, he went off to greet my friend and give her a hug. When he arrived at my home, he gave me a verbal greeting and headed towards the back of my house
