There is no particular rhyme scheme conveyed in this poem, also and the sentence length varies in each stanza not giving a particular rhythm to the poem. This poem is written in 1st person. The poem is about the wife of Lazarus, who describes her emotions throughout the poem and emphasis on the grief and torment she went through, until her husband was resurrected by Jesus back from the dead. In the first stanza of the poem, Duffy describes the depth of the woman’s grief by using “ripped”, “howled”, “shrieked”, “clawed” and “retched”. Duffy uses these words in order to really emphasise the grief and utter torment that Mrs Lazarus was going through. In the first sentence of this stanza it says “I had grieved” this is past tense which suggests that she felt sorrow, but not now. Where it says “burial stones” I believe this conveys the image of a graveyard where she grieved over her loss and it implies that it was a terrifying experience for her. In the second stanza Duffy talks about the loneliness that she is going through and how she can’t stand to live without him. For instance it says “noosed the double
