Because of this, there are very specific rules about what us girls can and cannot wear. “Skirts, dresses and shorts cannot be more than 2 inches above the knee.” So we can only wear long shorts? Wouldn’t long shorts be pants? “All pants and shorts must be worn on the waist.” Would I be punished for wearing my pants above my waist? What if I want to wear my pants around my chest?
It is similar to a scene found in dystopian novels. These uniform restrictions should not be okay. In America’s high schools, students should not be forced to wear uniforms; they take away a student’s sense of individuality, do not allow for self-expression, and they provide no financial benefit. No matter what alleged benefits people claim uniforms have, supporters cannot deny that they take away a student’s sense of individuality. Imagine this: 30 students sit in desks in a small classroom.
In this school, the students are only allowed to wear the school t-shirt, cakey pants, closed toed shoes, and a belt that won’t let your pants sag down to your knees or farther. Now that is very strict! Some other schools have it way better than IDEA; like my high school, T-STEM. All we have to wear is a yellow t-shirt and that’s it. Yet we complain about the color of the shirt and the way it looks on us and some even complain about it not being their color.
Like if a bully told you “your shirt is ugly, only old people wear that”, then obviously they are trying to help you not dress like your great grandma at school. As you can see, bullies were really put on this earth to point out your problems so that you can improve on them and become a cool kid; because if you are not cool then you’re obviously going to get bullied. Iran has strict rules for clothes that only women have to follow. In the novel,Persepolisshows the diversity of Iranian people and how religion can go too far, making people lives worse. The war with Iraq made things wicked. Many families decided to move on, and left Iran. While others decided to stay and suffer the cruelty on many aspects during the 1980s.
School uniforms can also be a very uncomfortable fashion that students would not take a liking to. They also won’t be the “quick fix” that many people think they are. The first reason uniforms should not be required is that most schools across the country believe uniforms take away from an individual’s identity, so they don't require their students wear them. In today's world a person’s identity and having a good sense of self is important to the diversity that Americans have shown in the past. In schools that require uniforms the student body all look like the same person, very bland and boring people.
Having school uniforms is not necessary, and there are many reasons to prove why schools should not make their students wear uniforms. The other side might say that school uniforms are appropriate and if their was not a dress code then people would wear inappropriate things. Well why not just draw a line, kids can wear what they want but if it’s to inappropriate then they have to change and get a detention. The principle should just give out a note in the beginning of the year saying what to wear and the lines of the length of the shorts. For the boys they can’t wear their shorts or pants to long with a chain.
Prayer in public schools is a controversial topic that has taken top-billing on many of Americans minds. In the article, Banning Prayer in Public Schools Has Led to America’s Demise by Gary Bergel states in the first paragraph, “On June 25, l962, 39 million students were forbidden to do what they and their predecessors had been doing since the founding of our nation – publicly calling upon the name of the Lord at the beginning of each school day.” Bergel is attempting to state that America has decreased in morals since this date as well as forbidding prayer at that time. These are the first two incorrect points of this article. They are by no means the only ones but these will be the two major points of contention addressed. First, the date Bergel uses is in reference to the court case of Engel V. Vitale in New York.
Each day, 100,000 students bring a gun to school, and another 160,000 students cut class because they fear physical harm (National Education Association). Those numbers may seem alarming, and so it is understandable as to why searches would be conducted to try and reduce these numbers. Also the controversy of whether a student’s fourth amendment right is being violated leans toward the administrator’s side. Schools do not need a warrant to be able to search lockers since the lockers technically belong to the school, and as long as there is reasonable suspicion, the searches are legal (Surveillance in Schools) (Constitutional Conflicts). Whether random searching is legal or not, it does not change the fact that students still feel violated of their privacy
Also there was countless number of bullying reports because of clothing. The students who could not afford nice clothes were usually picked on and taunted. It started to get so out of hand that parents started pulling their kids out of Augusta and transferring them to another school. So to prevent bullying problems and students from wearing irrelevant clothing the school established a new dress code policy where students were required to wear uniforms. This new policy helped reduce the amount of bullying throughout the school and also made the school look more professional.
