Drawing on Examples from chapters 2,4 and 8 of investigating psychology, examine and assess the relevance of laboratory based research to real life The purpose of this essay is to examine and assess the relevance of laboratory based research to real life. I will draw on examples from the work of three famous psychologists, Milgram, Skinner and Broadbent to illustrate the different research methods that have been used, and to examine and assess their relevance of laboratory based research to real life along with any generalisations that can be made. I will outline arguments for and against the relevance of laboratory based research to real life. One of the classic studies in psychological research was Milgrams (1963) study on obedience to authority. This experiment identified whether people would commit acts of inhumanity to another human or animal just because they were told to do so by an authority figure (Banyard, 2012). In Milgrams obedience study 40 people were set up to administer what they believed to be potentially lethal electric shocks to actors (Banyard, 2012). Participants had been deceived into believing this to be a study on memory function. All subjects, at the request of a man in a white coat, administered shocks, which they believed to be up to 300 volts, beyond which dose the recipient became silent, presumed to be dead (Banyard, 2012). Milligrams experiment revealed that ordinary people are obedient to authority when asked to behave in an inhumane way (Banyard, 2012, P76). The compelling benefits of using laboratory-based research are that this type of experiment provides the highest level of control. Laboratory based research is widely used in psychology and other fields as a consequence (www.simplypsychology.org/attention-models). However, Milgrams study looked at obedience in a single situation. In real life, directives may come
