From this outline psychology could clearly be defined as a science as it involves gaining a deeper understanding of humans within the world. However, there are many factors which need to be taken into account in order to claim psychology as science. Thus, this essay will look at and apply the main attributes that characterise a science to psychology, discussing the arguments for and against psychology being a science in relation to scientific methods and research biases. The scientific method involves experimentation exploring observations for cause and effect relationships. The design of which is so one variable is manipulating another variable primarily by gathering quantitative research.

Within recent years, psychologists have increasingly assumed new professional roles within institutional settings such as the criminal justice field. The criminal justice field has sparked the most interest with psychology due to the need for psychological intervention along with the multitude of ethical questions that lead to a debate within the psychology profession. However, with the interests and need for having psychologists working within the criminal justice field this has created a variety of different roles in which these professionals will have and also a change in which creates a working relationship between the law and psychology. The criminal justice system consists of many different professionals who all have different duties and responsibilities.
Only three months after the start of trials for Adolf Eichmann (a Nazi war criminal), Milgram formulated an experiment to question this dispositional view. For many war criminals, their only logical defense was that they had just been following orders. Milgram felt that Eichmann’s and others cruel behaviour were developed from their unique situation. In the late seventy’s Stanley Milgram decided to do an experiment which would tell the difference in whom was more obedient Americans or Germans. This experiment was held in Yale University. There were two players the old man around his fifties and an outside person. The outsider would strap the old man down to an electric chair and if he got any questions wrong he would electrocute him.

Surveys can be used for researched this is when a questionnaire is given out to a sample of the population ,the questions used can be closed ended either yes or no which gives limited information but is the best answers for quantitative data which is all about facts and figures that’s represented in graphs and statistics, while opened ended question gives people the chance to put more of their opinions e.g. it was interesting, these question support qualitative data while is about words this gives a broader view but harder to represent in graphs.
