Reading Response When listening to people talk, one comes to realize many things about the human race. There are many criteria to the way we tend to talk. Reading the articles, Doublespeak by William Lutz and The Truth about Lying by Judith Viorst, helps explain the common patterns that one is apt to do in their everyday life. In the reading Doublespeak, the writer explains to the reader how humans tend to pretend to communicate with one another, but really do not say much, all explained using four different terms. In The Truth about Lying, the writer shows the audience about the four types of lies that one tends to make in an everyday basis. Social lies are most known as white lies, not that severe but they are still lies. Peace-keeping lies are those that are “designed to avoid irritation or argument” (Viorst 137). Protective lies are those that parents tend to tell due to the fact that “they’re convinced that the truth would be too damaging” (138). This type of lie my parents tend to use way too much to not let me know what is going on financially in the family. The fourth category of lies is trust-keeping lies, which are those that involve three people. As the writers were explaining the four types of doublespeak or lies, they both came to state that the average person tends to at least use that type of language once a day. An example of doublespeak being used is, if you got fired from a job, most people would not say, “I got fired,” they would say, “I was let go.” This example could be used very often now-a-days with the high unemployment rate. Lies are used in an everyday basis, even though some people do not like admitting it. In my life the category of a social lie is most used, since I tend to always be the mediator in between my friends, they are always asking what the other said, which obviously I do not tell them the truth because that will be betraying their trust. Reading these two articles helps the reader understand the different types of the human language and explain the reasons
