Divination Object In The Brooklyn Museum

Fred Smith Professor Jackson ART 117 November 27 ,2012 The First artwork that caught my attention in the Brooklyn Museum was the "Divination Object (Gbaule)." It looks like this object is meant to scare something away and that's how it caught my eye. The artwork's shape and design was unusal from everthing else in the musuem. The object had a circular shape to it with a hole in the middle and a huamn looking face on the top. It had feathers around the top and sea shells on the bottom. It looks like two sea shells were used for it's eyes and a wide nose. At first i taught it some type of mask but i came to see i was some type of healing artwork. Both artworks have d to do with divination and healing. The "Power Figure (Nkisi N'Kondi: Mangaaka)" is a body figure while the "Divination Object (Gbaule)" is more like a mask. The "Power Figure (Nkisi N'Kondi: Mangaaka)" nails are used to determined the location of the injury or illness. Both i believe can be used more than once. Both are spiritual artwork. The location of one artwork is western Africa while the other location of artwork is central Africa. These objects were made up of diferent type…show more content…
I found the african art section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to being less interesting than the Brooklyn Museum. The Metropolitan Museum or Art had better lighting and use of the glass cases and room layout. But it was also more crowded than the Brooklyn Museum. The Museums' environment made me look at the objects as art. In the Metropolitan Muesum of Art the other artwork looked better than the African art section. From example i found the Greek art section to be more interesting than the African art
