When she then returned in the 90s she found that the list had flipped, with jobs and careers being in first place. This shows how attitudes have changed in a short time, making singlehood more popular. Another reason for the growth in singlehood could be the influence feminism has. More women are choosing to live alone, due to having the capacity to do so, as they don’t need the financial stability marriage once gave them. Feminism has
Over the last 50 years or so, the patterns of marriage and divorce have changed significantly, and are still changing in today’s society. Due to many factors including: less stigma, changes in women’s positions, secularization and cohabitation. Nowadays, there is less pressure to marry and a lot more freedom for individuals to choose the type of relationship they want. It’s considered more important about the quality of a couples relationship, rather than the legal status. Secularisation is also involved in why there are changing patterns of marriage due to churches being in favour of marriage, but as their influence declines, people feel freer to choose not to marry – according to the 2001 Cenus, 3% of young people with no religion were married, compared to up to 17% of those with a religion.
After this law there was an increase in lone parent families, cohabiting and even same sex couples, this was because it started to be more socially acceptable and married couples didn’t have to be forced into a relationship if they weren’t happy. However, The New Right did not like the idea of having lone parent families, they said that lone parents (mostly mothers) cannot discipline their children properly and are a burden on the welfare state as they need to claim benefits due to the fact that they are not working so they can’t support their children. Conservatives see marriage as the essential basis for creating a stable environment for bringing up children, so I don’t think that they are very happy with the fact that family diversity is such a big deal in our society nowadays as they have a very traditional view. Similarly to The New Right’s view, Chester in 1985 claimed that people aspire to be in a nuclear family because that is the way that most people in the UK have been brought up, he also claimed that most people live in a household headed by a married couple and will most likely be the head of a nuclear family in the future. He believes that the nuclear family is the ideal type of family where the husband is the breadwinner and the wife is the housewife
She is an outstanding citizen in this society. I think she would be a terrific parent, and I resent those who think she is a “bad” person just because she is a lesbian. Many children born into traditional marriages would be far better off being raised by someone like her than by a heterosexual couple in a dysfunctional marriage, but that’s just my opinion. I can understand that many people prefer that gay unions be called something else besides “marriage”, but I don’t have a preference on that matter. Sometimes I wonder what all the hate against gay marriage is all about.
Couples can share a life of dreams, excitement and happiness. Many believe that marriage put women in higher risk factors for abuse and violence. Marriage has become only a statement now because of the widespread social change. Many have stated that being marriage is not important any longer and choose to live together instead. But this is not the same as sharing an intimate and fulfilling life.
With a mother who chooses to spend much of her time outside the confines of a family home for whatever reason you can expect to see many changes. Another reason mothers have become less dependent on their husbands is because the divorce rate has more than doubled in the last 60 years. It is still agreed that a happy marriage is something to strive for and it is all around better for the family, though the divorce rate is almost at its peek. The woman’s job in the 50’s was to make the family happy and to steer it away from divorce at all possible, and since the woman’s role has changed so has the rate of divorce. Adultery, abuse, and unhappiness are not any less common now than it was 60 years ago, but it is now less tolerated.
Week 7 Assignment 2 Through history women and the GLBT, community has been looked down upon as inferior to men. As time has proven to be a good thing for women especially the last decade because it has been a time of great advancement for women in the workforce and the outlook that society has on them. I think that people in the United States are also becoming more comfortable with the GLBT community. More people are able to express themselves for who they really are and people are becoming more open to the idea of love without limits. I think it is important to look back from where we have come and see the progress that is being made from where we started to where we are today.
Marriages in India are more of a family affair, and as youngsters see the way their parent lives, they are more likely to understand that the output given is more stable and successful due to much lower divorce. Arranged marriages have been an integral part of the Indian society since ages past; around 75 percent of Indians, including 82 percent women and 68 percent, are conservative and prefer arranged marriages, according to The Taj Wedding Barometer, a survey conducted by the Taj Group of Hotels. In older times, the bride and the groom were neither asked for their consent, nor were they informed about the partner, as getting married in their religion and caste was more important. India is a home to many religions, and almost all of them preach arranged marriages. Hindus believe that a marriage is based on more than physical or emotional attraction, and at one stage Hindus were strict about arranged marriages where the parent’s decision was final.
Her idea of co-parenting was “If I’m going to contribute half of the income, then he’ll contribute half of the housework and child care” (Edelman 284). In other words, she “didn’t want to be the dominant parent in the house” (Edelman 284). It doesn’t take Edelman long to realize this wasn’t going to happen like she thought. She began to see that as her husband’s work hours “exponentially increased”
Women are choosing to have babies later which is also causing the birth rate to drop this is because there is less stigma on having babies t an older age so women are waiting and not worrying what people might think. Babies cost a lot of money so women are saving up first and then having their baby this is a problem for birth rates because once they have waited they are likely to have less
