Diversity in a college community A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you. A culturally diverse student community is generally more mature and held in high esteem. It gives all students an opportunity to share and spread their distinct cultures. Each individual brings with him/her new traditions, concepts, beliefs, thinking, methods of execution and new approaches to problem-solving. I was born and raised in India, the world’s largest democracy, before I moved to the United States of America at the age of 12 years. To me, India is among the best examples of multicultural, multiethnic, spiritual and peaceful coexistence where people learn to be tolerant and influence each other beneficially. The nation consists of a cross-section of citizens who speak over 120 different languages spread across more than 30 different religions. I feel all the more empowered because my ancestral lineage consists of several generations of highly qualified academicians, each excelling in diverse subjects like literature, mathematics, physics, engineering, medical science and astronomy. I am proud to have inherited this legacy because I can cut across boundaries and reach out to people from diverse backgrounds and academic specialties. People who get to know me are often astonished about the number of languages that I can communicate in, my cultural plurality and the depth of interactions I am able to have with them ranging various subjects.
