Diversity In America Jeffrey Douglas ETH 125 04/11/2013 Gail De Cina There is a lot of information about diversity in the United States that I did not understand before this class. Before the class I had heard about diversity in the work place but I never looked at what it can do for the United States. Before the class, I thought that diversity was just something that only affected the minority groups. I understand now that diversity is much more important and it can affect every group. I had always looked at diversity in terms of race but diversity works with different people from race, culture, sex, and age. But according to Census Bureau projections, that's a story that is changing: by the year 2050, minority groups are expected to account for 49.9 percent of the population.” This population increase is going to come from births and from immigration as well. The biggest immigration population will come from the Asians and Hispanic groups. These are not the only groups that will see an increase of population, people over the age of 65 will see an increase too. This increase in the minority groups will almost remove any racial or ethnic majority in the United States. The increase in the minority population will help with diversity in the United States but it will face some challenges. These challenges are going to be political, employment, health and social services. The United States will need to start addressing these challenges before 2050 or the country is not going to take full advantage of having such a diverse population. A diverse population does give society some benefits. The best benefit to diversity in the United States society is the increase to humanistic values. This can increase the way the groups sees their value and worth to the country and society. This increase of humanistic values than will increase the productivity and profitability of not only the companies but as well as the United States. Putting more thought in others viewpoints or believes before I act or speak is the first thing I can do. I can teach my kids to do this too. Showing acceptance of other groups is a behavior that I know I need to work on. I do know that I want to work harder on the rights of the LGBT community will help me be more inclusive and pluralistic. I am not a LGBT but it’s a community that I feel has their rights taken from them. They need their rights back since most their rights are basic human rights.
