Our state does not do all that it can do to prevent distracted driving. Many of us sit back, do nothing, and wait for the world to change itself, which needs to change. There are many different factors that play a role in being distracted while driving. Distracted driving causes a number of accidents every year, and even deaths. There are a tremendous amount of things that we can do as individuals and as a whole to prevent these accidents and injuries. There are laws against distracted driving, which result in receiving a ticket or worse if you break these laws. Even though there are laws, it hasn’t been enough to keep people from distracting themselves while driving. There is so much that we have yet to do to prevent this. There is a countless amount of accidents, injuries, and deaths due to distracted driving per year. Distracted driving does not only include texting or drinking, there are multiple factors that play a role in the issue. Playing your music too loud, eating while driving, or even having one too many friends in the car with you are just a few of the other factors. Too many families and friends are grieving over the loss of their loved ones because of these simple things that can be prevented. A mother, Kim Schlau, in Leawood, Kansas describes the tragic loss of her two daughters due to a police officer who was using his cell phone and computer when he collided into them at 126 miles per hour. Mrs. Schlau was mourning the deaths of her daughters the day after Thanksgiving, which could have been easily prevented. These tasks that take our attention away from the rode can cause such a tragedy in a matter of seconds. In 2011, 3,331 people were killed, 387,000 people were injured, and 10 percent of all car crashes were due to distracted driving.
