Tatum Paper #2 Cause/Effect Crack Cocaine: The Harmful Effects The use of crack cocaine, an extremely addictive and potentially deadly drug, results in many negative effects. Whether using or experimenting with crack cocaine, very seldom do people understand the severity of the drug, or realize the effects that causes dramatic changes in their life. When broken into two main categories crack cocaine has short and long-term effects. The effects of using crack cocaine enables detrimental, emotional, and mental aspects of a drug user’s life. Like most other illicit drugs, crack cocaine remains extremely insidious, because even with the possibility of death, drug addicts continue to use without caution.
Unit 12 2.1explain how individuals experience discrimination due to misinformation The attitudes people have towards those of us with mental health problems mean it is harder for them to work, make friends and in short, live a normal life. -People become isolated -They are excluded from everyday activities -It is harder to get or keep a job -People can be reluctant to seek help, which makes recovery slower and more difficult -Their physical health is affected. This is because society in general has stereotyped views about mental illness and how it affects people. Many people believe that people with mental ill health are violent and dangerous, when in fact they are more at risk of being attacked or harming themselves than harming other people.
However, the reality is that the result of some hate crimes does affect the victims in a monetary way. Of the 7,164 reported hate crimes 41.8 percent were against property (fbi.gov, 2013). Acts carried out were cross burnings, defacement of property, and destruction of property that have cost the victims a great deal of money to repair. There are cases when the damage or intimidation has caused the victims to relocate or purchase fire arms to protect themselves (Barnes & Ephross, 1994), which is another expense directly contributed to the crime. Not only does the person(s) under attack financially suffer, but the city and community loose too.
Summary of “The Missing Piece to the Gang – Violence Debate” by Dan Gardner Are there several reasons for gang related violence? There is an overabundance of ideas that politicians argue; including fatherless families, weak immigration rules, lenient criminal justice system, racism, poverty, and too many guns. Dan Gardner claims “these previously mentioned points are important and worthy of discussion, but there is something missing”.1 The cause he claims often is unanalyzed and scarcely made a reason, is the illicit drug trade industry. In his article, Gardner suggests illicit drug trade and the black market are primary causes of gang related violence, and most often, these causes are shunned. He cites Mexico’s strategy of rigid law enforcement to eradicate gang violence has a negative impact; suggesting that higher enforcement is associated with higher homicide rates and argues that markets are self-correcting mechanisms.
Drug Trafficking in the United States from Mexico Drug trafficking in the United States and Mexico is a huge problem for the United States because it has a negative impact on other areas in society such as crime rates. The government needs to find a solution to better control drug trafficking because it claims lives and destroys families. Research shows Marijuana and Cocaine are the top two most illegally abused drugs in the United States. James Gray (2001) points out: Not only is this drug-money corruption problem of enormous concern in its own right, but additional lawless behavior often is derived from it as well. Even though all of these strains have an influence on the racial differences in crime, I believe that the community contributes a lot to these differences. By observing at a community, one can derive that a community branches out to numerous types of strain. According to the text, African Americans show a disproportionate number of residents who occupy areas where there are higher rates of violence and economical disadvantages. These disadvantaged neighborhoods usually lack good public schools, job opportunities, and more often promote criminal behavior. In the U.S. there has been a drug problem for quite a while. While the police try their hardest to control it. This issue will always be a problem in the united states. The Drug trafficking caused authorities to change their laws to stop drugs from coming into the United States. There are ways that can help this problem be controlled.
There has been many cases where steroids, because it is a felony to sell them, has had similar circumstances to other popular drugs such as cocaine. These circumstances are people are being robbed and shot over them. Steroids have made it to the black market and are being sold as if they were other big name drugs such as ecstasy and cocaine. Due to the rising popularity of anabolic steroids, these instances of violence and gang related activity with them will only become worse, until you can find steroids on the streets like other drugs. The term drug has a very broad definition but for the purpose of understanding the social problems drugs evoke it will be referred to as any substance that can affect a person physically, or psychologically, has the potential to be misused and can be harmful to the user or society. This definition covers both legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco and illegal drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. Alcohol abuse in particular is a very serious social problem for which its severity is often overlooked when compared or categorized with illegal and/or more addicting drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. However the prevalence of alcohol use is apparent throughout the United States with average adults consuming nearly 22 gallons of beer, 2 gallons of wine and 1.5 gallons of liquor a year. According to the National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiological survey, 7.5 percent of adult Americans suffer from alcoholism or alcohol dependence.
Economic deprivation also reduces social trust and facilitates social disorganization, which in turn leads to youth violence and crime. The above indicates that economic deprivation may affect community and family processes in such a way that youth violence increases. Secondly, Boredom is one of the major contributors to social deprivation. In many working class communities, youth facilities or leisure areas are much scarcer, or have been cut by government and local councils. This leaves many young working class people with little alternative but to meet up with friends, and hang around streets and estates looking for something to do.
